But River was also weird and method actory, so had he lived and Joaquin died, there's a possibility you'd be making the exact same secret, just with the names reversed.

Anyway, it's probably not great to wish people were dead because they're weird and method actory.

Yeah, I know 'this is why it's a secret!!' but I still had more than a little side eye here.

Oof. That is pretty harsh, but honestly? I doubt you are alone. People were nuts about River

A bit extreme, I think.

I like River a lot more but that’s also because he hasn’t had a chance to ruin anyone’s perception about him in about 30 years. He had more natural talent but odds are pretty good he would pissed it away eventually. Partly because that’s Hollywood and partly because he did actually piss it away, just all at once instead of over time.

Love him still as an actor, but yeah, most of it is that he had a pretty clean image until his death when it all came tumbling down. But I'm pretty sure that, had he lived (Which I do wish he had, only without Joaquin dying. I wish both were alive today) he'd have said something incredibly stupid, probably about Peta or age of consent (considering his uprising) and gotten cancelled.

well, this deserved to be a secret so congrats. but also, it's kinda odd that you believe, by inference, that his brother's death either didn't impact his self-serious state now, or wouldn't have impacted river similarly.

I have no doubt that on a personal level his brother’s death was traumatic in the extreme for him. I think people forget he was right there, he was the one who called 911.

But as an actor he was exactly as the secret describes before River died. If anything, River’s death helped Joaquin professionally who had a lot negative press about being the younger, uglier, less talented Phoenix sibling until River died. And to an extent, it wasn’t wrong. He didn’t have the same natural talent. He also didn’t have as traumatic a childhood, which was a major factor in River’s ability to come across as far more mature than his age, even to adult audiences. Joaquin only got roles because he was River’s brother. They even credited him as Leaf since everyone knew all the Phoenix kids had nature inspired names and Joaquin didn’t fit that mold. And River’s death and the general knowledge at the time that Joaquin was there played a part in helping him return to his career as an adult. People wanted to see him succeed not because of anything he did but because he’d become a tragic figure. There’s no question he’s grown a lot as an actor since then, but it was because of River’s death that he had the chance to do that.

ok, it sounds like we agree that it's quite possible that river's death affected joaquin's rhetoric about his career.

But he helps so many cows! Think of how your wish hurts the cowwwwwsssss......

That's...an opinion.

I find Joaquin a very good actor. I don't like a good chunk of projects he's done, I don't always agree with his personal opinions.

So yeesh - this secret comes off harsh.

I honestly feel had River Phoenix not died he likely would have crashed and burned in another way or he would have left the industry.

But in all honesty, it's really sad that Joaquin lost his brother. They were both very young.
