Secret maker here...

(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't sure if this was meant to be a secret or just commentary, but figured I'd chime in. I don't think people mean to be verbose, per se, but sometimes you just have a lot of complicated feelings/thoughts about something in fandom and it's hard to boil it down to just a few sentences. I'm a long winded kind of person myself, so I can relate! And most of the time when I get a suuuuuuuuper long secret, I'd be hard pressed to edit it down even if I tried.

That said, I'm glad when people keep it short and sweet just because I'm not particularly talented at design and I worry the secret will end up looking like a giant wall of tiny text just because I'm not able to do much else with it. I do want people to be able to express themselves sincerely, and even if I don't understand what the secret's about (which is often the case) I'm glad people have a place to do that. Which is just my long winded way of saying I understand, and no hard feelings when there's a long comment secret. <3

Cheers,

a secret maker

ayrt - it was meant to be a secret! I've been meaning to make it myself but I hate making secrets on my phone and my laptop remains busted.

I knew you probably didn't mind because you seem like a very chill nice person. But it bugs me anyway! Kind of why its a secret, because its dumb that I care. But also I feel like making secrets is kind of a lost art form, as pretentious and dumb as that may sound. There was a certain art to getting your point across in a succinct way with a beautiful or appropriate picture.

Gotcha, I'll make it into a secret then, I just wanted to double check. Thanks!

Making secrets really is a lost art form, and I knew from the beginning that I don't necessarily have the skills that some people do with design. I'm no great shakes with photo editing technology at all and just started doing it because the whole "secrets you don't want to make" threads were a regular thing before I started doing them, posted by people who didn't have the time or inclination. So I figured that something was better than nothing? Because even if it was an ugly secret, more people would see it and the community might benefit from the activity boost. People seem to appreciate it, so I'll keep going if I can and also hope that others will contribute secrets as well.

Cheers,

a secret maker

part of it is also imo trying to be more casual or dialogue-y about it. i prefer when people's secrets seem to sound the way they naturally think, vs. a self-censored and edited for publication version of what they think.

when it comes to secrets, 'expressing something' is the focus for most people, not 'how best to communicate something effectively to a target audience'

besides, if every secret were terse one-sentence statements of fact it'd be much less human, and have much less interesting detail

i doubt anybody is judging you for when there's too much text on a secret though. that's not on you at all, it's not even your text!

That's where the artistry comes in. It takes skill to keep your style and casual tone while also being succinct and getting your point across!

yeah except... you missed an entire point of the comment there about that not actually being, or sounding, how people think, and me preferring the raw thoughts over a carefully self-censored presentation that worries about what people will think.

idk. your definition of artistry seems fairly narrow

Does any attention paid to the construction of a written piece count as self-censoring and worrying what other people will think?

if you're doing it because some anon thinks you're writing too much of a journal when you wouldn't normally then lol, yeah? is this a serious question?

i urge everyone to not care and freely express. be terse if you want, and verbose if you want! whatever is natural to you

is this a serious question?

Do you realize that, combined with the dismissive "lol", this is an asshole thing to say?

Wanna know something anon? You, and your attitude, is why people worry what others will think. If you want people to express themselves freely, then don't mock them when they share their thoughts.

Exactly. And I'm finding it kind of ridiculous that the AYRT is claiming you're making other people self-conscious, when they're the ones rebuking everyone in their secret with a fixed idea that less text is better.

Sometimes, more than one person is being a jerk.

It can happen, yeah, but I'm not interpreting "lol" and "is this a serious question?" as rudeness. It looked more like an attempt to deescalate a fight that the other commented insisted on having. Despite the fact that "you're shaming other people's expression!!" is pretty rich, coming from someone who wants their secret to rebuke other anons for not making their point faster.

Interesting because it actually seems like you are the one not understanding other points of view. Clearly there is a miscommunication going on here. People can write the way they think and it not be an entire page long. Also, editing and choosing your words is not censoring. I guess if you really want word vomit with no thought put in it at all then I can kind of see how you would think it's censoring? But not really.

AYRT

no one said "if you think with extreme brevity, you shouldn't write that way if that's natural for you." it is, however, not unreasonable to say that most people do not think that way and that would not be a way they naturally express themselves.

original anon is expressing a personal preference. im expressing a personal preference. then original anon (I think?) started talking about artistry for some reason. idk what you and they are doing now, but it sounds more like you're arguing some kind of philosophical thing? which... shrug, doesn't change my personal preference

Deadpool 2 oughta have committed to the gag from the end credits of the previous movie and cast Keira Knightley as Cable, then just have everyone but Wade see "Her" as a big tough guy. Really have leant into the meta.

misfire - ignore
