1. Fandom has always been pretty gay.
2. No one thought their gay ship was going to be canon in the 90s. Or earlier. Or really until maybe 2005.
3. People stayed in the fandom and shipped their non-canon ships for all that time.

And frankly, the most boring ship in any franchise has always been the super obvious "going to be canon" ship. Fandom ignoring those in favor of something interesting has been a long-held tradition since at least the days of Sherlock Holmes and the Random Love Interest for John Watson.
