Weigh in on my travel options?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay I just found out I'll have time off in early August and want to plan a trip. I'll have 10 days total. The options I'm considering are:

-A week long backpacking trip locally. This is the easiest option that would take minimal planning and the least money.

-Inn to Inn walking adventure on The Dingle Way in Ireland. Or backpacking another 5-6-ish day path.

-England road trip. I've never been to the UK and would just hit some highlights like London, the Cotswolds, maybe Stonehenge idk. Rent a car and see where it takes me.

My favorite way to explore is walking/backpacking but I also feel pressure to see as much as I can because who knows if I'll have another chance. So I'm torn.

Opinions or options I haven't considered?

Are you in Europe? I ask because if you’re an American, you might not be aware that pretty much all of Europe will be on holiday in August. Lots of local places will be closed, everywhere else will be crowded. Prices will be double their usual for that timeframe. And renting a car in England with an American driver’s license might not be an option.

I am in the US. Definitely meant to put that in there.

I know, but my job is odd where I don't really get to choose my time off so I have to just make it work when the time comes. Its rare I even get this much notice, which is why I'm trying to actually plan something. But the timing is one reason I'm thinking of just doing a local backpacking trip. Its a crazy time for vacation here in the states too, so might just be worth it to run away to the mountains.

I do have some family in England too, so depending on their schedule I might be able to visit them and play tourist that way.

If you have the money to do it, go! Just be sure to look into the situation about renting a car before you book any flights and check if your insurance will cover you or if you need to buy additional coverage. You may be stuck buying the coverage from the car rental place. The UK is really easy to travel on public transport so the car shouldn’t have to be a make or break thing.

Oh snap, I always forget public transport is an option. There is zero public transport where I live.

If you want walking I'd offer Japan, but not in August. August kills people from tropical SE Asian countries, an American would die (figuratively, I hope).

Seeing as much as you can in a short time goes a lot more smoothly with reliable public transportation, if only because driving in another country is not as easy as it sounds. License restrictions, traffic laws you aren't used to, and rental costs (to say nothing of the other goddamn side of the road) can end up being the worse option. But I think your UK-or-Ireland ideas are sound otherwise, so maybe decide based on literal sites you really really really want to see. It would probably be hard if you really wanted to backpack but turned out not to really want to visit the particular sites on your route.

Backpacking in England in August is fantastic - Cornwall is great, the Cotswolds are great, the Cumbria Way is gorgeous there's a ton of places easy to get to by train then set up for walking. You could go for say, 2-3 days in London, then head out to one of the backpacking areas for the rest of the trip.

Driving in the UK looks easy and short distances, but it is absolutely packed with people (especially in July-August) and getting anywhere takes forever. I'm Australian so it was the correct side of the road for me and I still gave up the car and took the train instead, it was much easier.

I would really recommend to research countries with a good train/public transport system. It allows a better walk options than car. Also would you consider Scandinavian or Baltic countries? They could be on a colder side in late August though
