Advice or whatever. Because I have one and would like opinions if you've got 'em.

What is the best state in America to live in?

Re: Ask your questions

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oregon

Re: Ask your questions

+1

Pretty sure it's genuinely Oregon. Blue state, a lot of the same good features as Washington and California, not as egregiously expensive to live in as Washington or California.

Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are also all probably high on the list. And California despite the high COL.

If it weren't for the housing crisis and insane price of housing I would say Virginia. Ocean, mountains, hot summer and chance of snow in Winter but it won't stay around long. Has all the things I like. Other than the house thing which admittedly is a pretty big downer.

From a legal perspective, California is good. Honestly, anything in the 9th Circuit (Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Guam, Hawaii) or 1st Circuit (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island) are going to be safest.

Personally, of the states I've lived in, Massachusetts was my favorite, it is expensive, though.

Weigh in on my travel options?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay I just found out I'll have time off in early August and want to plan a trip. I'll have 10 days total. The options I'm considering are:

-A week long backpacking trip locally. This is the easiest option that would take minimal planning and the least money.

-Inn to Inn walking adventure on The Dingle Way in Ireland. Or backpacking another 5-6-ish day path.

-England road trip. I've never been to the UK and would just hit some highlights like London, the Cotswolds, maybe Stonehenge idk. Rent a car and see where it takes me.

My favorite way to explore is walking/backpacking but I also feel pressure to see as much as I can because who knows if I'll have another chance. So I'm torn.

Opinions or options I haven't considered?

Are you in Europe? I ask because if you’re an American, you might not be aware that pretty much all of Europe will be on holiday in August. Lots of local places will be closed, everywhere else will be crowded. Prices will be double their usual for that timeframe. And renting a car in England with an American driver’s license might not be an option.

If you want walking I'd offer Japan, but not in August. August kills people from tropical SE Asian countries, an American would die (figuratively, I hope).

Seeing as much as you can in a short time goes a lot more smoothly with reliable public transportation, if only because driving in another country is not as easy as it sounds. License restrictions, traffic laws you aren't used to, and rental costs (to say nothing of the other goddamn side of the road) can end up being the worse option. But I think your UK-or-Ireland ideas are sound otherwise, so maybe decide based on literal sites you really really really want to see. It would probably be hard if you really wanted to backpack but turned out not to really want to visit the particular sites on your route.

Backpacking in England in August is fantastic - Cornwall is great, the Cotswolds are great, the Cumbria Way is gorgeous there's a ton of places easy to get to by train then set up for walking. You could go for say, 2-3 days in London, then head out to one of the backpacking areas for the rest of the trip.

Driving in the UK looks easy and short distances, but it is absolutely packed with people (especially in July-August) and getting anywhere takes forever. I'm Australian so it was the correct side of the road for me and I still gave up the car and took the train instead, it was much easier.

I would really recommend to research countries with a good train/public transport system. It allows a better walk options than car. Also would you consider Scandinavian or Baltic countries? They could be on a colder side in late August though

Stargate

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you couod make a new Stargate show what would it be about? A reboot? A whole new adventure?

I kind of want exploration through the stargates from the pov of non-Earth peoples. It would be hilarious to have an ep here and there where an Earth team shows up and are just total weirdo aliens (because we totally are weirdo aliens).

Stargate Victoriana.

The Gate is unleashed in the Victorian era and the British Army decide to try and conquer the galaxy instead of the US Airforce.

I'd watch that.

I love your idea of a show based on non-Earth POVs. That sounds way fun.

We (humans) really were our parents' (Ancients) children in that franchise at times so Earth teams showing up occasionally to fuck things up for the non-Earth people and seeing their perspective without the built-in protagonist sympathy would be interesting.

(Yes I know that even with protagonist status the shows sometimes still made it hard to side with the humans!)

Just SG-1 with a different team.

That's it. That's the whole pitch. Just episodic weekly stargate adventures. Maybe a little more on the science side and a little less on the military side but same basic concept.

Where/how do you find your books to read?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Like do you just browse the library or store? Do you follow a blog or book influencer (I'm just assuming such a thing exists...) or something else?

I follow a few subreddits where people ask for specific suggestions and I'll make note of ones that sound interesting, but otherwise I just kind of browse my library in hopes that something jumps out at me.

I look for reviews. Book Riot is good for finding a wide variety of things and for finding more progressive, inclusive genre things.

I also buy new things from authors I already know I like.

Sometimes when I'm browsing something like tvtropes and I see something listed on a trope that is a favorite of mine, I'll buy it to check it out.

And then sometimes I just love to browse Half Priced Books and find some stuff that looks fun.

I use two subreddit. /r/suggestmeabook and /r/horrorlit. Especially love horrorlit (since that is mostly what I read).

Recommendations, people talking about books online, awards nominations. I will also sometimes just go through the New Books posts on Locus and then anything that interests me I'll search on Goodreads and bookmark it there to read.

Recs, either online or from friends. I'm a slow reader (hello, short concertration span) so the to-read bookcase gets ever fuller.

Re: Where/how do you find your books to read?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
There are a couple subreddits if I'm a specific mood (suggestmeabook where I will just search for keywords to find past recs, I never post myself...same with mm_romancebooks, where I will just search for specific tropes of whatever I'm in the mood for at that time). I don't go on them super often, though, maybe once every 1-2 months.

Usually I find new stuff through GoodReads. The new releases tab through my account lists new books by authors I've read previously, plus new things in genres I've selected that I like. There's also the most popular and most read by date lists that I check occasionally, and I will check the news and interviews page, which has all kinds of lists (new stuff by specific genre, or books based around a certain theme, or an interview with an author where they will talk about their newest book, and books that they like/that inspired them).

But honestly, new books that I find through these sites ending up just being added to my never ending list of books that I want to read and/or will get eventually. I already have so many that I haven't read that I really don't need to actually look for new recs for years.

Some recs, but mostly I just browse the library catalogue online.

Do I want to take my contacts out and relax or do I want to play Beat Saber for a bit first?

I vote relax. But I'm really tired.
