N!S 1: I fucking HATED what happened to Donna, tyvm. And I still say the Doctor could have just reabsorbed the memories, dammit.

And as for people being less upset if it were a woman: Gay couples are still really uncommon in canon, so when they get, not just broken up, but violently destroyed by one of the DYING, it does effect people more than when bad things happen to straight couples, which are a dime a dozen. Imagine that.

I'm assuming the OP didn't know it was set in Wales. And Ianto is Welsh.

Just to reiterate what everyone else is saying, you definitely missed something. Fandom did, in fact, throw a huge fit over Donna (and rightfully so!). I do see your point re: Tosh, though, and that makes me sad. =(

I think that might have been partly because a lot of the complaints about Ianto's death was that it 'didn't mean anything', whereas Tosh's did. Or something.

But mostly it's cause Ianto was ridiculously popular, which just sucks. *Tosh highfive* If I had an icon of her I'd use it, but I don't, so I shall settle for my default sad icon.

N!S1. ...You clearly weren't looking fandomward at the time. Believe me, there was wailing and gnashing of teeth for Donna's mindwipe. There were people bawling over Tosh. However, SLIGHTLY different scenarios, here! Tosh got a hero's death, and that makes it a little easier to take. To quote TVTropes on their Crowning Moment of Awesome article:

Tosh gets shot in the chest. It is obvious that this is a fatal wound, and the Big Bad Gray freakin' gloats over this fact. But she applies pressure and survives for something like twenty minutes while talking Owen through his own problems at the nuclear plant, which lead to his own very visible oncoming death over which he freaks out, and then calming him down and talking him through his last minutes without ever letting on that anything is wrong on her end. Only after everyone else's situation is resolved does she allow herself to die.

Ianto? Virus released in to the air. Completely senseless.

Donna? You really do have to remember that it's a DIFFERENT SHOW. There's been, what, forty companions or so? But Torchwood was deliberately designed to focus on a small group of individuals, of whom people got extremely attached to. With Doctor Who, you know from the outset that COMPANIONS DON'T LAST. Even the Doctor's own granddaughter didn't last! They're not all sad departures, but they all depart. Torchwood is a different beast.

Now, if it had been Gwen? It ALSO wouldn't have been the same, because like it or not, Ianto was the one Jack was involved with. If it had been Gwen, I'd probably dislike the pairing from the outset (and not just because I personally dislike leading man/leading lady pairings) because they split her up with Rhys. And let's face it, Gwen isn't the most hugely likable character - Ianto was the favourite of a LOT of people.

Seriously, the scenarios are not comparable.
