I always thought I was in the minority with my Hagrid hate, other people hate him?

Honestly I hate him because I think he's not a well written character and because he does SO MUCH WRONG and gets the trio and their friends into mortal danger every book except six (1: fluffy, norbert, forbidden forest, 2: aragog, 3: hypogriffs, 4: skrewts, 5: grawp, 7: I love harry potter parties) yet harry keeps defending him.

Honestly I thought he should have died during book 5, it would have the same emotional impact as Sirius but I would get to keep sirius >_>

Plus he has the equivalent of an 8th grade education. Why are they letting him teach, again?

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much all of this. Hagrid is my most disliked HP character. I think he's brash and annoying and too stereotypically "warm and fuzzy", as if I'm being forced to like him because he's not that intelligent and has had a hard life. I've no idea why they let him teach, particularly since it felt like the books made a point of how bad a teacher he was and how relieved the students tended to be when they had a substitute. He felt like a cliche to me, all in all.

I disliked him from his very first appearance, when he made light of every house but Gryffindor (outright insulting Slytherin and Hufflepuff as I recall) and attacking 11 year old Dudley for his father's actions. Yeah, Dudley was a snively little cretin at the time, but how was that fair? He hadn't been doing anything in that scene. Why curse a child for what an adult did?

I actually had a lot of sympathy for him for being expelled at such a young age, practically making him an untouchable in wizard society. That was extreme and harsh, especially considering how many wizards continue to put children in danger in the books.

If there had been more focus on the fact that he had to pretty much raise himself and the impact of being a half giant would have had (beyond being used just to score quick sympathy points and to showcase which other characters we should find cruel and unlikeable), I think I would have actually enjoyed him. Instead, it felt to me that all of his sins were whitewashed and forgotten and pretty much any character who doesn't have to face consequences for his actions is going to bore and annoy me.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah I forgot about that! He pretty much made Harry prejudiced against every house when he first met him. Also he tortured poor Dudley. Dudley's not the nicest kid, but that's mostly not his fault and he DEFINITELY did not deserve that pig's tail.

Oh! And he also almost killed Harry on the motorbike in book 7! I forgot about that near death experience. Honestly WHY they'd entrust his safety with HAGRID of all people.

I think I'd be able to stand hagrid a bit better if anyone was allowed to criticize him but noooooooooo everything he does is perfect!

Honestly if my son got savaged on his first day of care of magical creatures, EVEN if he provoked the creature, I would sue. I mean sure the malfoys are assholes, but like honestly, any good parent would sue the teacher in that situation.

Yeah, he is a very believable type of character--just one I can't stand. I'm still floored how in the very first book he does something stupid for selfish reasons (that he's forgiven for because it's cute he can't control his selfish impulses), the kids cover his ass (Ron getting hurt in the process with no sympathy from Hagrid) and then Hagrid presides over their detention. And none of them (not Hagrid or the kids) seem to remember that they're serving detention for his behavior.

One reason I always liked Ron. He had the least patience with him.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true. Hermione doesn't have much patience for him in the fourth book, either and I like that. I mean Harry's an idealist, but there's only so many times the "He has good intentions!" line works. Three times in the first 200 page book he gets Harry into imminent danger! It's ridiculous.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't even considered the motorbike or the incident with Draco, but you're right - as a parent, I'd have been pissed too. The kids were thirteen, and sure, the wizarding world seems to have a different definition of what's appropriate in raising children (Neville's uncle holding him upside down out a window to "spark" his magic, anyone?), but the hesitation on the kids' part in that scene made me think it was inappropriate even for them.

Where Lucius Malfoy and I differ is that I'd have gone after the school district, not the animal in question. The school district made the choice to allow an untrained teacher to be unsupervised and endanger children as a result, after all. The animal? Well, it's an animal. It's not its fault. Killing it would have solved nothing, especially since there apparently was no disciplinary action taken against Hagrid.

The lack of criticism was what really drove me over the edge, but I'm like that with pretty much all characters. If they don't have to face consequences of some sort, I've very little interest in them.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well Lucius is an ass and he wanted to hit Hagrid where it hurt, he has enough money otherwise. He should have sued the school. And honestly Hagrid SHOULD have been fired over that! And then to "make up for it" he makes the kids feed flobberworms all year. So they learn nothing. Then fourth year they also learn nothing while Hagrid conducts ILLEGAL ACTIVITY and breeds incredibly dangerous creatures for no reason whatsoever. It's a miracle they passed their care of magical creatures exams at all.

I swear I wouldn't mind Hagrid if people who called him out on his bullshit weren't immediately written off as terrible people. It reminds me of this episode of 30 Rock where Liz tries to dump a guy for being boring but every time she tries he says YOU'RE DOING THIS BECAUSE YOU HATE BLACK PEOPLE and she has to keep dating him. Anyone who dislikes Hagrid is written off as a bigot despite the perfectly legitimate reasons for disliking him.

1.) Fluffy was just a guard for the Stone, that was a necessity.
3.) Buckbeak helped Sirius escape.
5.) Grawp was a huge help, both as a diversion for Umbridge and during the final battle.

Jesus, Hagrid didn't put them in any more danger than Dumbledore did! "Go back in time and fix everything!" "Come with me to get the locket!" "Go find all the horcruxes!"

I don't begrudge Dumbledore endangering them - so I certainly don't begrudge Hagrid for his pension for dangerous animals.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
1) They wouldn't have had to go down there if Hagrid hadn't told Quirrel about Fluffy
2) While that's fair, I meant more that Buckbeak savaged a 13 year old and Hagrid shouldn't be showing 13 year olds things he can't control that will hurt them.
5) And they could have found another distraction that wasn't going to try to kill them. Then again I think the giant subplot in general is useless as you barely see them in the final battle.

Also Dumbledore put them in danger but he himself admits that he did the wrong thing all the time which is why I'm more okay with it. No one's ever allowed to tell Hagrid he did the wrong thing or put them in danger without being yelled at by Harry.

And there's a difference between liking dangerous animals and putting the children you're charged with taking care of (in loco parentis) in danger because of it. Aka: fluffy, norbert, aragog... There's also a difference between liking dangerous creatures and putting students in danger because of dangerous creatures you can't control, aka: skrewts, hippogryffs etc.

In addition, if you are going to show them dangerous creatures, you take the proper precautions. Like Charlie and the dragon handlers in book 4.

But I digress.

[identity profile] lady-boheme.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay I understand what you're saying but...

DUDE the books would have been soo boring without all of that stuff! I see it as a fantasy/adventure series - it needs adventure, it needs danger! And if danger only ever comes from the bad guys creeping in the shadows, then it gets boring. I think it's much more clever to have a sympathetic character with flaws inadvertently mixing things up a bit.

I respect your opinion if you don't like Hagrid, but we should be fair to the series as a whole, and recognize important plot points/fun action scenes without just thinking Hagrid is an inconsiderate douche. Because that's not really fair.

HOWEVER Harry was a total douche for sticking up for him all the time. I don't begrudge Hagrid of his flaws but Harry should have (or let someone else) said OI THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd actually have MUCH less of a problem with Hagrid if Harry and the rest of the cast would admit he's done stuff wrong and stop protecting him from all bad opinions and saying everyone who doesn't think everything he did was great including put them in danger was a terrible person.

So maybe my anger at hagrid is misplaced a bit but he also never takes responsibility for his actions, so there's that.

[identity profile] onydanse.livejournal.com 2009-08-15 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
This. It really irritated me that he got away with all that crap without so much as a stern talking-to, much less a smackdown. It just seems he got away with stuff anyone else would have been read the riot act for. Of course, so did the trio, so maybe part of my dislike comes from the 'gryffindors are awesome and can do no wrong' meme.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh that annoys me so much sometimes. Like don't get me wrong, some of my favorite characters are mad guilty of this (Ginny, Ron, the twins) but the gryffindors can bully just as badly as the slytherins. Not only that but they got really mad at the ravenclaws and hufflepuffs for rooting for Cedric instead of Harry which is just ridiculous. Cedric was a huffelpuff, of course they're going to root for him!

(Anonymous) 2009-08-15 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Draco shouldn't have been such a disobedient twit. And he grossly exaggerated what happened to him.
