All cliquishness is annoying, but is far as I'm concerned, this is still a vast improvement over the days when adults shamed each other over not giving make-believe up by a certain age. Or felt like their friends would shun them if they knew they hadn't. I love how much less closeted everything relating to fantasy and imagination has become, in the age of the internet. How much people get together and compare notes and go "wow, you had an invisible creature that would run alongside you when you went somewhere in the car? I thought I was the only person in the world who did that!" with actual enthusiasm and curiosity and build on each other's creativity. And frankly, I love the way fandom forges bonds between people of different generations. I watched Labyrinth when I was in my first year of high school, and there were old ladies in my mother's line dancing group who thought Bowie was mighty fine, and it was great. And it really broke down any sense I might have had that we "need" to maintain age segregation, or that I was somehow out of place in fandoms aimed at older or younger people. I've been the oldest person in the group any number of times, since I kept commenting on people's fics when I read fanfiction and letting people whose writing I liked get me into their fandoms, and honestly, most of the response I've gotten about that is younger fans feeling validated. Like they don't love this "because they're inexperienced," they love this because it's good. And someone in university or beyond can take it seriously and take what they think about it seriously. In my experience, as long as you're not rude or dismissive, or try to act like being older makes your opinion worth more than anyone else's, people size you up based on what you're adding to the community. Far more than how old they think you are, or how old you turn out to be - assuming that's information you share online in the first place.

I don't see why it should "improve" this way
