What, like "what terrible hairstyles!" or "this wasn't the hairstyle of the time!" or something?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-24 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

I've been a MASH fan since I was 12 and I've never heard anybody say anything about the hairstyles before.

This is what I came here to say.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah-- I mean I don't doubt that it's happened, but in all my time in and out of the fandom, I've never been part of a hairstyle discussion... When hair HAS come up, in an 'X's hair looks great in season/episode Y' sort of a way, it's never been particularly defensive, just a personal opinion shared.

Exactly the same. What, now? Hairstyles?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-24 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Doctor or not, the military would never let them get away with the hairstyles they had in the later seasons. They were all too long and floofed up.

I was going to say! The first thing vets pick up in TV and film are uniform and hair/grooming errors. It's really annoying, though there's an allowance for war zone stuff and Special Forces beards.

Surely the military would "never let them get away with" 3/4 of the things they did on that show. I feel like if it's OK to salute a general while wearing full drag it's probably OK to let your hair grow out a bit.

talking about hairstyles is probably the thing most people feel comfortable intellectually to talk about, like a position of fandom strength.

if you're talking about the bun she wore on the top of her head I agree, that looked terrible.

I just considered it a necessary weasel: if actors are doing work on other shows or movies, they may not want to be restricted by a period haircut (though at least a short period haircut could be covered by a wig). And for a long-running series like MASH trying to keep military cuts for literally a decade would be annoying.

Do you think these days if a live-action TV series ran for years and years (which seems increasingly unlikely for anything that isn't a news/talk show), they'd use CGI to give digital haircuts? (You can only conceal so much hair under bald caps/short-cut wigs)
