I'm (enjoying?) following the current Eurovision drama, (we're waiting for the Joost Klein trial, will The Netherlands leave the contest in retaliation, will Martin Österdahl resign etc.) Today, it was reported that six countries threatened to withdraw from the final, including the eventual winner Switzerland, and only agreed to participate with 25 minutes left to the show!

Oh I am all in ESC drama.
Tbf aside all the shitshow that happened I actually enjoyed it.
I am also sad that there isn't a lot of memes/gifs etc on tumblr because of "think of Palestine" crowd. (yeah their boycott didn't work surprising no one)

What is the drama? I keep hearing about it in vague terms but I haven't seen it at all. Google only tells me fans are mad because a certain character died, but that was months ago... is there something newer?

Looked like that character had come back in a chapter cliffhanger, turned out another character was just meat-pupeteering his corpse.

The fan fav char Gojo died a while ago. Fans kept hoping he would be back. Last week ended with the main villain seeing the "ghost" of Gojo. This season it was revealed (in basic terms cuz they use a fucky magic system), that it is one of the other heroes piloting his body to use his magical abilities and not Gojo. Just his body.

Ohhh I see hahaha. Killing Gojo I can understand, with my limited knowledge of the series, and I don't blame the creator for being just that frustrated that fans only cared about one character. But bringing him back just to reveal it wasn't him after all does strike me as an unnecessarily spiteful twist of the knife.

He's made it clear he's not a fan of Trump, which has angered a handful of mouthbreathers who think they're totally destroying a VA legend who'll likely never see the videos, much less the idiot comments.

There's been a rise in people trying to 'cancel' Markiplier. Mostly because he hasn't spoken up about Gaza and someone dug up audio from a podcast from last December that revealed he's more of a centrist.

Which - yeah I can understand no longer wanting anything to with him after finding that out, it's just weird that they're bringing it up now rather than earlier.

Also there's been about two solid months of someone posting about their ex-fandom friend/boyfriend named as an ego character in the tags about all the problematic things they've done.

Hold on. You can understand wanting to cancel someone over having views that could be described as centrist?

Also, no one is or should be under any obligation to "speak up about Gaza." All that's doing is asking for a loyalty pledge; it won't have any effect at all on the war.

This brand of "activism" is ultimately just people who feel helpless and don't know how to engage in actual, instrumental politics going all in on the symbolic.

Well you said it - I can understand why, but that doesn't mean I agree with it either.
And that last line pretty much sums up the sentiment. Right now aside from pouring in money and keeping up awareness, people (and young people at that) probably do feel powerless right now and this is as close as it gets to feel like they're doing something rather than nothing.

And honestly, I would rather hear from people who know what they're talking about rather than people who can only know so much - even though speaking up is a good thing, you're right that it isn't an obligation either.
