but love reading fanfic of?

I wouldn't say there are characters I *hate* in canon but love fanfic of exactly-- like, outside of 'love to hate' villains who might provide more interesting fanfic fodder.

But I've had the opposite issue where my favorite characters in a movie all had such a satisfying end that I was COMPLETELY uninterested in fic for them, and instead went hoping to find fic for the WORST characters.

Snape from Harry Potter.

Endeavor. Garbage character who I think can only be redeemed by turning himself into the nearest precinct after the war is over.

However, I love angsty Hawks/Endeavor fic. And smutty Hawks/Endeavor fic. Just wish there was more bottom Endeavor. :/

Canon Angel (Buffy and Angel the series) is the worst, but I love fanon Angel.

Mostly its because fandom takes the best bits of him and ignores the rest to make a really compelling likeable character, but also it probably helps that 99% of fic I read he's a side character, a love interest, or equal ensemble but never the main sole focus.

Maybe not "love" reading fic, but I absolutely hate MCU Tony Stark but will read fic with him in it. Especially during the "we all live at the tower/big dysfunctional loving found family" days of that fandom. Loved me some team fic.

Same. He's overdone in the movies where everything is about him. But in fics where he's there but not the center stage overshadowing everyone else, I'm happy to read about him.

Hate who Vlad Master's became in show canon but I like what the Glitch in Time comic verse started with him and I love the "good dad Vlad" comics on Tumblr. They heal what show canon hurt <3.

I've had a bunch of friends with persecution complexes. Whatever collection of identities that they fit into always put them last in the Oppression Olympics, in their eyes. They all became TERFs or devout Christians, the last two things I would have expected of them when we were friends, but now it makes perfect sense.

...but it's pretty funny that it ended up here.

I always hated Draco Malfoy in canon (as we were clearly intended to), but a mutual kept posting about Drarry all the time until eventually I gave in and read a couple of Drarry fics she recced, and I ended up getting totally into Drarry. I also ended up loving fanon!Draco, particularly post-series!Draco.

He's still an awful, hateful, cowardly, borderline-sadistic little twerp throughout canon, but I love the idea of him facing up to some extremely hard, complicated truths about his own worldly misconceptions and the type of person he's been so far, and ultimately developing into a better person.

Draco is such an intensely image-oriented person, so I find it incredibly interesting to see what happens in a post-war scenario where popular wizarding society views him as a coward and an all-round piece of garbage. The boy who was taught (and wholly believed) that his public identity was the be-all-end-all of life, becomes a person who is rejected and reviled by most of society, and he has to figure out how to live with that. There's something I find incredibly compelling about watching a character who has hit rock bottom in their life, at least partially due to their own bad deeds, grapple with the reality of their situation, and where to go from there.

I don't care about Enver Gortash in BG3 AT ALL but by God he is a great character in fanfiction. I think it's because [spoilers] you can't save him in the game, but you can do anything in fanfic.

Yes! Also, fanfic lets my brain gloss over that atrocious hairstyle of his a bit better.
