I don't consider "hurt/no comfort" and whump to be the same. Anon's above explanation hits the nail for me. Whump is heaps of angst added on and on for the purpose of more and more drama, whereas hurt/no comfort to me is more of a single traumatic event without a happy/optimistic end.

To use anon's example, hurt/no comfort to me would be be a car accident in which a loved one dies and the fic ends with the MC still in pain and grieving.

AYRT You know, you're totally right. "hurt no comfort" probably overlaps with wump sometimes, but it doesn't necessarily have enough wumpage to be an equal tag.
