As someone who works with real 9-year-olds: don't care. Nobody interested in an ancient dragon character in the body of a 9-year-old likes the character because they're into real 9-year-olds, because those characters are as much like real 9-year-olds as the teenage characters in the secret are like real teenagers.

This. There's a massive difference between an actual 9-year-old who acts like a real 9-year-old and an immortal being in the body of a 9-year-old who acts like... you know, an immortal being.

Yeah, seriously. And also, writing actual nine-year olds with anything that seems accurate to someone who actually deals with kids is vanishingly rare in fiction, for some reason. Even when the author thinks they've gotten "into the head" of such a character, they generally haven't. When I'm reading things written by adults, the characters feel like adults to me. Or like paint-by-the-numbers caricatures of children. This is not automatically a bad thing, but it makes me skeptical of people who claim they "react to underage" in fiction. I see a lot of "child" characters pantomiming a fairly affected cuteness, exaggerated helplessness, or an intellectual disability, and very few that resemble real children.

Comment above is a DA, by the way.
