A lot of anime characters, especially ones in high school, exist in the same kind of limbo as a lot of western TV high school characters - they're characters who are nominally 16-18 only they're written like they're 20+ and played by 25-30 year old actors IRL and don't look or act like real teenagers at all.

I also don't care who or what people ship. But there are dozens of animes out there where the 'teenage' characters look much, much younger than their supposed age... so unless you're saying you only don't care about teenage ships for anime where the characters look older, I really don't see your point here.

Interesting reasoning.

Personally, I'd just say the characters are fictional, and anyone with a problem with it can keep it to themselves or vent in their own private corner. No need to justify it with however the characters may be perceived.

I don't think anyone needs to justify their shipping preferences, but as someone who is personally uncomfortable with certain types of explicit underage content, I get you on this.

I mean, the characters in ATLA don't even look pronouncedly older than they are, but even there I find their ages extremely easy to forget, especially in the last season. Back in 2020 when my friend and I watched the show, I brought up the topic of ships, and was genuinely caught off guard when she said she wasn't comfortable with shipping any of the characters because they were all kids. It just honestly hadn't even really occurred to me to think of them that way when I'd been considering the prospect of who I'd ship with who in ATLA. I mean I guess in S1 I saw them more concretely as kids (Aang especially), but by S3 their ages just felt so ambiguous and also largely irrelevant that I genuinely didn't think to consider age as a factor.

I don't care because the characters are fictional. They're not real people, no one's going to hurt them or anyone else, not matter what kind of porny scenarios they imagine them into. The people pearl-clutcing about adults shipping teenagers can take a hike and take their nasty purity culture with them.

I agree fully with you OP. Same with what you said in a comment--if a character looks like an adult and acts like an adult, whatever. If a character looks like a child and acts like a child... Keep it away from me please

I think part of this - and it's definitely the case with JJK for sure - is these writers want to be writing older characters, the characters are supposed to be older and written to be older, but this doesn't pass the editorial sniff test for Shounen Jump/other serials for teens. Teens/tweens/even elementary school students are their target demographic, and I remember that when I was a 12-year-old, 16 was an age I could imagine and admire like a cool older sibling, "real" adults over 20 were ancient and weird and looked to me how I see people over 20 drawn in some anime - ancient lmao. That's why you get so much whiplash from The Greatest Fighter of All Time being 16 years old and high schoolers with two PhDs.

With JJK, Gege has openly said he wanted them to be young adults on their first jobs/college or just post-college age, but his editors rejected the idea and insisted they be teenagers in a school to better appeal to their target demo. Watching JJK with this knowledge in mind it's obvious from how quickly the plot ditches the school component entirely and - as you point out - from how the characters look and act. They're supposed to be in their early 20s; that was the original concept. I suspect that might be the case for more than just JJK, too.

I "don't get" Skibidi Toilet in much the same way I don't get War & Peace or most of the MCU: I haven't looked at these works and have no compelling reason to do so.

I always think of being 14 years old and showing my mother Charlie the Unicorn and Badger Badger, only to get the cold look of judgement for thinking they were funny.

Its just how things are and there's nothing wrong with kids having their own weird humor.

I think that's exactly why a lot of beginning RPers make OCs that amount to "myself but with a gimmick". ~~And why a lot of bad RPers tend to be functionally playing that OC even when they're ostensibly a well-known canon character.~~
