I just miss getting that feeling over new things. There are still things I'm that into, a few of them. But nothing new in ages. And almost anything new I've enjoyed has been connected to older things.

Oof, I know this feel. I especially miss when I was a kid/tween and I could get super engrossed in the trashiest books. I remember reading so many Sweet Valley books and being like, "OMG! This is amazing! Will they survive the ship wreck/haunted house/field trip?!! Will Jessica get cast in the play and kiss the cute boy?!! Will Elizabeth win the writing competition and kiss the cute boy?!!"

And then somewhere in my mid-teens my brain reached a certain threshold for critical thinking skills and I stopped being able to enjoy that stuff. And honestly, it sucks. I would love to be able to enjoy trashy nonsense fiction again; it was so fun!

I feel like the last few years has been even worse than usual for not being able to fully get into stuff, though. IDK if it's depression (probably), or age/experience (maybe), or just the types of media that're being made now (probably this too). But yeah, it sucks.

Is it Sarah J. Maas you can't get into?

It's nothing to be too concerned about. You've just grown up a bit. You've seen enough media that your brain feels the 'beats', as it were. And any show that just relies on hitting those beats isn't going to satisfy anymore.

Unfortunately, that's most available media - I mean, we're talking about shows written to a deadline, so most of the time it's not going to feel amazing to you. Part of you recognizes (or maybe all of you recognizes) the stock characters, the stock situations.

That said, every now and then something will come along that's well written enough, or different enough from what you're used to, that you'll fall right in. Sometimes that'll be a shock to you even - very "why THIS show? why's THIS one eating my brain". Sometimes you'll see it coming, though, too. Maybe a particular actor is drawn to the same scripts you are, that kind of thing.

(Not that it's always explainable. I mean. I was in my 40s and got brain-eaten by an animesque I'd intended only as 'something to have on in the background over breakfast'. Life will continue to be weird. You're fine.)

NGL, as someone who headcanons repressed-vicious-brat!Alastor/repressed-extremely-servicey-dom!Lucifer, this headcanon really works for me.

Alastor being tall because he made himself tall, because he has an acute need to control how he is perceived; tall stature, refined air, unflagging grin and all. Meanwhile Lucifer just walks around being short and derpy without a care, because it doesn't matter how he's perceived; he's the king of hell.

But I feel you. There's music from one particular area of an early 2000s Gameboy game that's just s remote control car navigating the different landscapes of the house, avoiding mice, cats, etc. anyway, the song when the car enters a light up mat area of the playroom was my jam and I want to hear it, but no one ever knows what I'm talking about.
