BIG SAME. I mean I shipped Shawn and Gus from the jump and then one episode really got me on Juliet and Lassiter. The actual Shawn-Juliet relationship was SO uninteresting to me compared to both those relationships.

Did anyone not do this?

Lots of people from what I remember. One of the reasons I never got super into Psych was that the fandom juggernaut pairing was Shawn/Lassiter with the next closest being Shawn/Juliet

Lol, no. Shawn/Lassie was the juggernaut ship and Shawn/Gus was notably significantly smaller. Psych is like example numero uno when people talk about racial bias in shipping.

This always bothered me because most of fandom is based on pairings that have tension and butt heads, exactly like Shawn/Lassiter. Fandom doesn't juggernaut happy couples.

But also, fandom really does have a racial bias. I just think this wasn't as clear cut as fandom of the time wanted to make it out.

I mean there are PLENTY of ships that don't start out with at least one-sided hate/contempt/etc? Friends-to-lovers IS still a popular thing!

I'm not saying that there AREN'T also a lot of ships that butt heads and a lot of rivals/enemies to lovers, I like both types depending on the characters and settings and such for each individual ship. But like... it's not because fandom NEVER latches on to friends. A lot of the foundational ships-- gay and straight-- of general fandom are best friends or partners rather than rivals! Kirk and Spock or Starsky and Hutch or Mulder and Scully are all more in line with the level of head butting that Shawn and Gus do as best friends and partners than the level that Shawn and Lassiter do as... their whole deal.

+1

Obviously no one has to ship Shawn/Gus, and there's nothing wrong with shipping Shawn/Lassie instead. It's a good ship.

But like... the idea that no one would ever ship a friendship with the kind of relationship Shawn and Gus have is just patently ridiculous. It's very obviously not true. There are tons of juggernaut ships with that dynamic.

All of your examples have more rivalry than Shawn and Gus though.

And obviously fandom latches on to friends sometimes. But by and large you can easily predict who is going to be the biggest ship in a fandom just because of personalities and rivalry. I love Shawn/Gus and ship it, but I immediately knew Shawn/Lassiter was going to be huge.

...

Starsky and Hutch?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-08 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not whether Shawn/Lassiter would have been the bigger ship or not, it's that comparatively to white dude friendships that get shipped, Shawn/Gus would have had actual content if they had been a pair of white dudes. Like they have scraps in regards to fic and art and did at the time and you'll still get people acting like shipping them would 'ruin' the sanctity of their friendship, not something m/m fandom usually cares about lets be honest.

I do think Shawn/Lassiter would have pipped out Shawn/Gus, but the staggering majority of m/m in the fandom being the former would not have been as massive, and that just is a fact.

It's difficult to me because you are probably right and there is bias. But I am really not into friends to lovers thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah I’m right with you there, friends-to-lovers is my jam in fiction as it is but these two ships were so easy to like because they both had solid writing and such great dynamics in the canon.

Regardless of if you ship them or not these two pairs love one another so much and it always made the show a delight to watch.

I shipped Jules/Lassiter so hard. I couldn't ship Shawn/Gus because Shawn got on my last nerve too many times. Gus deserved better.

You're so right! I also love this show, the platonic relationships in it, and those two ships! I do ship Shassie, Shuliet, and Gus/Lassie too. As well as all four of them together. I'm less into Gus/Juliet, but I think they'd still work well together. But my top three are Gus/Shawn (they're already practically married), Juliet/Lassiter (they're PARTNERS), and Shassie (can't help it, I do love the rivals/enemies to friends to lovers trope).

I'm starting to think it's just the way of things, in real life too, that the people with relationships that would make interesting couples are more likely to be friends who aren't interested in each other any other way, and the people who end up happy together are nice but boring.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-08 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I do agree that probably having Shawn/Gus be canon wouldn't have changed much, but I think that having Juliet/Lassiter be canon would have to change their dynamics because Lassiter behaves pretty differently with his romantic interests versus his friends and coworkers (I'm excluding the thing with his original partner from the pilot because the writers got away from that pretty much immediately with Juliet being introduced in the next episode to air and I feel like it didn't really fit with how they presented his character from then on).

To be honest, as much as I love the show - and it's amazing - I never really shipped anyone with anyone.
