Admittedly, I'm curious what books that person recommended. Some books on systemic racism are more heavy handed than others.

I feel like that would be a whole different story and genre, like a utopian story about what such a society could look like and trying to explore that concept? Which is a cool idea but not the same thing as a fantasy action story mostly about specific characters' concerns. Idk, maybe there's a story that can be both and it's awesome, lol, I'm just thinking about how not every story can or should be everything, there are normally limits on the scope.

I don't think it's bad for a story to leave problems unresolved either, many amazing stories are about coming to terms with ongoing problems or just solving the problems the characters can.

Getting mad at Fullmetal Alchemist for that is about as logical as getting mad at Steven Universe, which is to say, not very. Lots of shows before and after have had genocides happen or be alluded to but not resolved perfectly by the end, but for some crazy reason, Steven Universe was the first one fandom threw that big a fit about.

("Some reason": homophobic trolls were successful at drumming up hate for SU by positing "think of the genocide!" in order to turn its fans against one of the first explicitly LGBTQ-positive kids shows.)

Given some of the opinions I've seen expressed by people who tend to complain about how "problematic" things are, I'm not sure they know what it would actually take to prevent a genocide. I...actually think many of them would cheer one on, and tell themselves they were doing it for the long-term greater good (which is, of course, what almost everyone who participates in genocide tells themselves).

I've had it on my TBR list for a while because I saw the words "medieval horror" so added it, but haven't gotten around to reading it.

Is it getting hyped somewhere? Its not a new release, its been out for a while (10+ years).

This is a pretty popular opinion tbh. It comes up in recs a lot and always it seems like half the replies are raving and half said they were bored. I can’t remember what exactly it’s about but I know enough about the writing style and tastes of those who love vs found it boring to know it would be a waste of my time to pick up a copy.

BIG SAME. I mean I shipped Shawn and Gus from the jump and then one episode really got me on Juliet and Lassiter. The actual Shawn-Juliet relationship was SO uninteresting to me compared to both those relationships.

It was really good! I didn't love some aspects of the last quarter, but it was still overall a really effective, chilling, and memorable horror movie, and a really interesting take on the trope of a zombie virus.

Gosh, idk if you're alluding to it speaking to a real life situation, but I'm glad that scene helped you recognize abuse regardless. I think fiction about abuse that treats the subject in a serious light can be very helpful to understanding it. GoT is kind of hit and miss for me when it comes to abuse, some parts I thought were very well done and some didn't work for me personally. I do feel that storyline captured the control and cruelty of incest abuse pretty well. Hope you're doing okay nonny.

I read this book waaaaaaaay too young, and remembered it as 'story about girl living with her dog in isolated cabin after running away, then there are more dogs and also a sensible guy' and when I reread later I realized how much my too-young self just glossed over/possibly didn't get.

But I love this book. It's amazing.
