I just assume that, even with best intentions - and I believe him when he says he's working on it - that the books'll never be finished. Of course, I still hope it will be, and would be pleasantly surprised if he does finish the series.

In the meantime, there's fanfiction out there that's so much better than that flaming dumpster of a final season of GoT.

I don't think he is even working on it anymore, not beyond occasionally thinking he oughta do something at some point, I think he is just running the time out on his deathclock.

If he did care, and was working on it, then he'd at least commit to picking a successor to finish it on his notes. As long as it isn't Eoin bloody Colfer.

Brandon Sanderson can have that series done in a month.

Lol true

I kinda suspect that he's writing in the same way I'm "writing" my fics currently. I think about writing daily. I have ideas "that I should totally write" and then... I don't.
It feels like sort of working on them while I'm totally not.

Is this a dig about Colfer writing And Another Thing… after Douglas Adams died?

I just came across that book in my shelves and was wondering how it held up. I remember it as passable: pretty good in keeping the tone, perhaps a bit unimaginative.

Do you have a much more negative feeling about it?

You mention Eoin Colfer and I'm suddenly reminded how much I loved the first Artemis Fowl and how utterly disappointed I was by the last few books. :/

I'm a little different to you. I accepted long ago he'll probably never finish the series and recently I realised I'd crossed into not even being sure if I'd read the final books now if he DID publish them.

I'm of the mind that he isn't saying anything definitive until he has the whole series finished.

I think he's written all the bits he wants to write: I don't just say this because of the long gaps in publishing, I say it because each book became more about wandering around the world and picking up bits and pieces of story, rather than a narrative. He probably has a bunch more he's written but would have to do the hard slog of shaping into an actual book and really can't be bothered. But someone will probably publish a book of those fragments and short stories eventually, Tolkien-style, and that will be fun.

I hold out hope that he’ll finish the series even if it seems increasingly unlikely. I think we can all agree that if he finishes his books, even if they are bad, they’ll still be better than the TV show because they’ll at least be bad in a way that’s interesting, unlike the wet fart of an ending from the show.

If given a choice between “Swings for the fences but fails” or “Tries for nothing and succeeds,” I’ll take the first one. Ambition is an inherently beautiful thing, even when it falls short.

Same here, nonny. I'm still holding out some hope, even though I know it's probably not happening.

If there were just one book left I'd think he could make it. But there are two. I keep saying: even if we get Winds we'll never get Hope of Spring.

I recommend coping with In This Light by SigilBroken on ao3.

I don't expect he'll finish the series, but I am hoping for at least one more book before he dies. ASOIAF seems like the kind of series that keeps on expanding in length and won't fit the original size planned for it, so my guess is if GRRM ever publishes Winds of Winter (if), he'll also announce the series will probably need to be 9 books, and when he publishes the next book, it will still be extremely far from wrapping things up, etc. So I AM still holding out hope for more books, although I have given up on this series being finished, TBH.
