Who are your very favorite characters, in any media? What do you love most about them?

Probably Steve Rogers. I love his personality, character motivations, and ability on Marvel Snap (lol).

Roronoa Zoro because loyalty is one of my favourite character traits and Zoro's got that in spades. I also love that he's the obligatory cool guy but 90% of the time he's just a huge dumbass and the contrast just works. He and Luffy share the same underutilized, lonely brain cell which makes his devotion to Luffy even more delicious. They just get each other.

Also, he's straight up one of the funniest characters. Dude canonically gets lost walking up the stairs and it will never not be hilarious.

It's funny thinking about this, because it became clear that there is just no one character I've ever encountered who could be THE favorite character of all time. And it turns out that I do have a reasonably specific model in my mind of what that character should be. The Platonic ideal of the Favorite Character and all the characters I like are just imperfect reflections of that, seen through a mirror darkly.

Anyway Lord Peter Wimsey and Nynaeve al'Meara stand out as two characters I have absolutely adored for a very long time, even if neither of them is my nonexistent all-time favorite.

I don't wanna say, because everytime I mention a fave they reboot the show and lose everything I liked about it. I don't wanna jinx any more things I like by admitting I like them.

Donna Noble

Donna Noble. I just love everything about her character...except her ending. Her ending actually made me suddenly burn out on Who and I haven't been back. But if I ignore that, I just love her so much. She's not perfect, but that is part of the love.

YES! She was my favorite character on Doctor Who. I sobbed when she left.

I love Tom Wambsgans from Succession.

This is not because he's a lovable person. He's kind of awful! He's a VERY FLAWED person and kind of a major dick, like almost every single character on Succession. I just love the character because of the layers, the amount of shit he's willing to eat to get ahead, how he wants to do the right thing (spoilers: like with cruises when he finds out) and then fails. I wish there were more seasons, but I also don't, because the series was great as is.

There are fans who feel this way about every character on this show. Shiv, Roman, Kendall.

I tried to balance my answer to this question between characters I think are exceptionally well-made, and characters whose existence gives me dopamine.

The characters from Succession all totally fail on the "gives me dopamine" front, so I didn't pick them as faves, but they are so freaking well-written and acted, absolutely any of them could be a person's favorite and I'd be like yeah, I get it, that's a damn good character.

Dana Scully - IDK man, I just love her. She's intelligent, she's determined, she's a hard worker, she can handle her shit, she's brave in the face of danger, there's a part of her that's a people-pleaser but she doesn't let it dictate her actions. She has this deep-seated sense of dignity about her that's hard to quantify.

Tony Stark - I love me a hot mess with a truly complicated relationship with their own sense of self. If said hot mess brazens through their hot-mess-itude with unparalleled BDE, that's even better.

Laura Roslyn - The way her character blends nurturing mother energy and ruthless pragmatism, and it feels totally cohesive and believable. Like Scully, she also has a deep-seated sense of dignity about her that's hard to quantify.

Kara Thrace - I love me a hot mess with a truly complicated relationship with their own sense of self. If said hot-mess brazens through their hot-mess-itude with unparalleled BDE, that's even better.

Laurent of Vere - The way he's honed every aspect of himself to cold, rapier-sharp precision out of necessity, and as a coping mechanism, but is still flesh and blood and conflicted human feeling on the inside. Pacat gets the fine balance of his character just right, imo.

Like half the characters in Andor.

Also, the fandom versions of a whole bunch of characters, but I don't think that really counts.

What a great description of Scully. She's so great.

I liked most of the main and supporting characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender but especially Toph. I liked how they showed her strengths and weaknesses and how her blindness was truly a part of her character. Example: she was rarely shown looking at people when they were talking but had her ear turned toward them instead.

Uncle Iroh was also a favorite: I like characters who can be comical but also pull cool badass moments when they need to. Plus his fatherly relationship with Zuko and rebellious but caring nature. That old man rocked.

I also like The Gang in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. They're assholes who more often than not get what's coming to them but you also learn throughout the show that they're all very damaged people who found very toxic ways of coping with their problems. Charlie Kelly is my favorite of the group and we learn in season 1 that he's a survivor of csa. All throughout the show you can see how chronic ptsd affects him in ways that are actually pretty accurate and it leads up to a scene that makes me ball in season 15.

Mac's scene of coming out as gay to his father after 13 seasons of denying being gay is also pretty powerful. I just love how the show about assholes being weirdos sets you up for scenes like this after literal years of build up and you don't see it coming. It just hits you in the gut out of nowhere and it's perfect.
