Lol, I get it. And, look, I can't naysay fanfic -- I read it and I write it. But I do think that, when it's the main thing people read rather than a side dish, it can skew their preferences and expectations.

It can also depend on the fanfic. I know that the Daria fandom has had professional/semiprofessional authors in it throughout the decades, so there are fanfics with solid plotlines and dialogue that's true to the characters. Plus the fics do included non-Mary Sue original characters that are believable. If the fandom has a high enough proportion of authors who have significant writing skills, a diet heavy on fanfic may not skew preferences quite as much.
