I like when a character can’t cook, but works hard and tries their best to make food for someone they care about. Simply not being able to make anything, not even a sandwich, is weird (though I did read a book once where the MC literally couldn’t make a jam sandwich).

That goes too far for me. Unless there's a really, really solid explanation for why a character can't figure out how to put stuff between two slices of bread, like they're an alien who just landed their spaceship and never heard of sandwiches. Something like that.

The explanation given was that she’s never had to cook in her whole life, so she couldn’t figure out how to smear jam on a piece of bread without it tearing.

I guess I could believe that, assuming that the character is also rather dim-witted.

I loved this about Jackie and Hyde from That 70s Show. Jackie messed up a batch of cookies, trying to cheer Hyde up, but he was still willing to eat them.

I once read a novel (sf, parallel world to Earth) where a human teaches the people of the new world how to make a sandwich, like they didn't have that knowledge before. I was like, but what were they doing with sliced bread, meat and condiments, then? Just eating them in separate piles, like biting into the bread and then slurping down a spoonful of mayonnaise? So dumb.

If that book is what I am thinking of, it is a parody of the Bible.

DA

But I'm not sure why that would make it any less annoying?
