I like characters who can cook to their specific tastes, even if we would consider that taste bad. Especially if everyone else in the story says they can't cook.

IMO, that would be an interesting approach to the whole cooking skills issue.

Ooh yes, give me more of this. Characters who are actually excellent cooks according to their own species'/culture's tastes but everyone else thinks their food tastes awful.
