So you're telling me he attached himself to a woman for 20+ years even though he was really gay, had a family with her, and now he's deciding to come out as gay?

I mean, people have absolutely done that before. It doesn't mean that's what is going to happen here, but it is possible. Joel Grey was married from 1958 to 1982 to a woman and fathered two children (one of which was Jennifer Grey) and publicly came out as gay in 2015, when he was 82.

But that was also during a time when it wasn't socially acceptable to be gay. Hugh Jackman having a beard over the last 20 years doesn't make sense.

ayrt

Right, because everyone knows that actors that come out don't get shut out of parts anymore. And people that come out as gay don't get shunned anymore by family members, aren't the targets of hate crimes anymore, and don't have hate directed at them on the internet. Everybody in the whole world is enlightened now, and somehow, any internal struggles with their sexual identities and what it means for them are completely a thing of the past.

As much as I wish that were true, it's not. Yes, there's less of a stigma now versus forty years ago, but that doesn't mean that it's easy for everyone to come out.

Clearly you’ve never heard of Phillip Schofield. Or Kevin Spacey.

Joel Grey came out to the public when he was 82 but he had come out to his family YEARS before that.

…this happens all the time though? Maybe it’s true for him and maybe it isn’t and maybe we’ll never know.
