I love when characters can cook, too-- especially when they look like someone who maybe wouldn't be able to or wouldn't bother to. One of my favorite characters very much has 'I do not take care of myself' vibes, only for there to be a reveal that he can cook very time/attention intensive dishes and seems to enjoy doing so.

With characters that we don't KNOW about, I tend to believe that they CAN-- and if it's a character I like, I put thought into what level of competency and style of cooking, when and how they learned... This character who grew up neglected learned to make gourmet meals with a combination of cookbooks and advice solicited from other adults in his life, that one can do some pretty bare basics, this character has never had to/been able to cook for himself beyond using the hot plate obtained in university but is a master baker when he visits his parents and can use their kitchen, this character learned to do food prep in the army but hasn't picked up a knife in years, that character lives off of toast and fast food until he has someone else to cook for and then it turns out he's highly competent in the kitchen but doesn't care about feeding himself...
