Murder She Wrote was the healthcare plan for so many elderly actors.

A lot of them had their insurance with the actors guild, but you have to be an active actor to qualify. A lot of older actors, particularly women, struggled for roles and their insurance would lapse. If that happened, you could have your agent contact Lansbury and she'd use her clout to get you a role. Might not be a big role or a central role, but it'd be work, and it would reset the health insurance clock. Lansbury was kinda awesome like that. If you've ever wondered why so many golden age of Hollywood actors had a bit role in Murder She Wrote, that was why.

Also, if you were LGBTQ, and struggling, then Estelle Getty would get you on The Golden Girls. She actually had it in her contract that she wouldn't do anti-LGBTQ humor. And if there were LGBTQ jokes, then the bigots had to come off as the butt of them.

Older female actors used to be awesome like that.
