If cars just suddenly stopped working and couldn't be fixed, how inconvenienced would your life be?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's say for fun trains are still going. But no bus or car or taxi etc.

My commute for work is a 15min bike ride so that would be okay, but there is not really a grocery story or anything like that nearby. According to googlemaps it's about a 2-3hr walk there. Which would suck to then only buy what I could carry and what would survive a 2-3hr walk back. There are no trains here.

I'm literally dead, thankfully. The living would be envying me.

Well, I like walking so that wouldn't be a problem, but I probably couldn't buy anything cold, lol (unless the stores allowed me to have a rolling cart with cooler, or rolling cooler). I don't live near a train station (though I wish I did).

I mean there's a grocery store within walking distance of me, but I would still starve to death bc they couldn't get deliveries

Most people posting ITT would starve to death

I could still make it to work, I live close enough to walk anyway. I couldn't see my family at all, given that they live 150 miles away and there are no trains here. My diet would become much more limited, as the only grocery store in walking distance is expensive and has a relatively small selection. I don't have a bike, so anything more than a couple miles away would have to be a whole day's planned trip at least.

I live in Texas, so fairly inconvenienced. Our public transportation system sucks. And I already drive 30-45 minutes to and from work every day.

I live in one of the few cities in the US with good public transit, so I'd be fine.

I'd be walking an hour to work and an hour from work every day. Not so terrible when the weather's mild, but awful when the extreme temperatures hit. I'm across the street from a grocery store and a little further down from an outlet mall though, so I'd be fine for food and clothes assuming they still get their deliveries somehow.

Re: If cars just suddenly stopped working and couldn't be fixed, how inconvenienced would your life

(Anonymous) 2024-06-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
short term, not really screwed. The grocery store is less than 2 miles, so aside from having to go every other day instead of once every 2 weeks, doable. Same for post office (to ship orders) and general expenses, I can bike or walk without issue. My partner is WFH so she's fine aside from having to make her own coffee because I know for a fact she'd never bike for coffee.

long term, though, the inability to road trip anywhere would suck. no more conventions, especially not to vend with a trailer's worth of stock. US rail infrastructure is not equipped to handle passengers with luggage, which fucking sucks I wish we had invested like Japan in both local and long-distance rail. Who dropped the ball in the railroad lobby?? We could literally have outdone Japan's shinkansen system by now if we weren't sucking the dick of gasoline and oil.

The nearest grocery store is a twenty minute walk, so I guess I’d be okay food-wise until they stopped getting food. The library’s a thirty minute walk, which is still doable, so at least I could still get books. I wouldn’t have a job though, because my work would be a four hour walk.

Would take more effort than I'd like, but I would be pretty alright with food and even family. Small town. Going to uni a town over would be harder... but I guess I can switch to online.

Small town, no public transport at all, huge distances. I would be dead as soon as I ran out of meds and couldn't get more.

Re: If cars just suddenly stopped working and couldn't be fixed, how inconvenienced would your life

(Anonymous) 2024-06-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't drive, nobody in my life drives, and I live in a big city with a half-decent train system. I live about fifteen minutes walk from the nearest train station, and I live five minutes walk from all the other daily-life amenities, including a public library. So I'd be much less inconvenienced than most.

HOWEVER, I do still use the train system to get places outside my immediate neighborhood, and it is not equipped to handle an overnight 600% increase in transit-users, which is what would happen if everybody in the city suddenly needed to use public transit to get wherever they needed to go. Basically, I think it's safe to assume that if all motor vehicles vanished over night, the train system would be nightmare-ish to use until government oversight and system infrastructure adjusted to the societal cataclysm that had occurred. So the train system would likely become a "use in cases of necessity only" type deal for the foreseeable future.

I live 16 miles from work, don't own a bike, and the only trains here are Amtrak and a tram downtown, but I can WFH, so yay!

Everything else is really close, like, grocery store a 5 minute walk. I agree with the other poster, though: everything shuts down and we starve to death because there are no trucks to bring food to the grocery store. Also: nothing in any other stores, no garbage collection, no utility repair when a storm takes out the power lines or a water main breaks, no mail, no plumber or electrician service, no delivery of anything to your home, no restaurants...

My husband's job would be infinitely harder. And I hope you don't mind an extra day or three added to your mail deliveries.

Re: If cars just suddenly stopped working and couldn't be fixed, how inconvenienced would your life

(Anonymous) 2024-06-19 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
My life would be miserable. It's a 5-6 mile trip to the nearest grocery store, and yes I have a bike and I could make it but I'm already past the max weight for my pike so I wouldn't be able to carry much else before my tires pop.

Also my job is 15 miles away, but more importantly there are some HUGE hills between here and there. My heart would fucking explode trying to huff and puff up those fuckers.

Also also my job revolves around shipping and even if planes made it alongside trains the whole supply line would be irrecoverably fucked.

It's about a 30 minute walk to the closest train station, which is doable. I'd buy a bike lmao.

Does subway count as a train?
As a hypothetical my life wouldn't change that much. I have 4 working train lines nearby and 2 subway lines in a walking distance. I use them already.
(yeah, probably you can guess I am not American)
But it probably would kill all logistics in my city pretty much instantly. Also millions of car people going undeground also sounds like total collapse

Re: If cars just suddenly stopped working and couldn't be fixed, how inconvenienced would your life

(Anonymous) 2024-06-19 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be fucked so hard.

I live about 18 miles away from my job, on a regular day it takes me about 45 minutes to commute one way.

Well, I'd be able to walk to the grocery store, but instead of a 5 minute drive it'd end up being about a 30 minute walk one way.

Kinks

Would you want the kinks you enjoy reading or watching in real life?

I wholeheartedly absolutely would not. Mine are definitely fantasyland only.

AO3 Comment Etiquette

(Anonymous) 2024-06-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hey F!S. I've got a question about comment etiquette on AO3.

I like to try to respond to every comment that I receive on a fic, even if it's just a, "thank you!" Commenting can be an anxiety-ridden endeavor for many people, and I want those who take the time to leave one for me to know that their words have been seen and appreciated.

Well, I started a WIP back in the fall, and then life sort of...took off for me. I've been crazy busy since late December, and it's only recently that I've been able to devote time to it again. While posting a new chapter, I happened to notice that I'd missed all the comments on the last one! I would like to acknowledge them, but... it's been 6 months at this point.

My question is whether responding now would come across as weird, or as something of a faux pas (I guess I have my own anxieties about commenting!). What are your thoughts? Has the moment passed, or would it not be a big deal to leave responses now?

Assuming that delivery trucks still existed, I could survive in winter but it wouldn’t be fun. There’s a dollar general two miles away but they don’t carry anything I’m not allergic to except Skittles. The closest actual grocery store is seven miles (and three mountain ridges) away and I could do it for about 60-70 days a year in “winter.” I would literally die walking there and back in the summer :(
