Do you ever imagine that all the antis that try to ruin your ship are the angry, mentally ill people that don't manage their illness with drug problems or former school bullies that have no one to bully after graduation? My fandom bff says that she follows her Christian values and forgives the antis but I think she's pulling my leg because she's not religious afaik.

How do you manage?

Antis can't ruin my ship. I ship with or without their approval, which I don't require to ship.

Their issues are their own; I will neither make assumptions about what those illnesses might be, nor will I take any responsibility for them.

At most, I might feel pity. Perhaps a little hope they'll grow up one day and realize it's not that serious. But otherwise, it's not my problem.

I don’t put any thought into them beyond blocking any I see because who spends any time thinking up bizarre shit about other people? They have no other outlet in life or they get off on yelling at people, it’s that deep and uninteresting.

I haven't dealt with any antis since I left Tumblr. I mostly post and read fic these days.

I think they are teens and YAs that want to feel important and righteous. Hating ships (generally for some arbitrary moral reason) is an easy way to do that.

Sometimes I think about that one reddit post where someone spent a bunch of time and effort debating something then checked the other person's profile and realized the dude they were taking seriously is some guy that drinks his own piss.

Not that I expect antis drink their own piss, or that I spend any time inventing weirdo backstories for them (don't care enough to, honestly). More like a general worldview about the futility of arguing things over the Internet with people you don't know, and what value you should give their random opinions. Unless you're being actively entertained by it, it's a waste of time.

In my experience most antis these days are mentally ill teenagers that have been neglected by their parents and get sucked into the anti culture since it gives them something to feel good about. Any anti past the age of 21 basically never grew out of their teenage angst. As someone who used to be an anti I can attest that they behave very cult-like.

See, I think these days many antis are not being neglected enough. They are coddled and used to always having specifically designs child spaces.

So they never built up the ability to self regulate fandom spaces for themselves. Things like YKINMK and 'Don't like, don't read' are something they don't understand.

They think fandoms spaces should change to accommodate what makes them feel icky instead of learning to not interact with spaces that make them feel icky.

They don't see this sort of content as "It makes me feel icky." They see it as "It's potentially harmful to others and indicative of maladaptive, potentially harmful sexual impulses."

So yes, "don't like don't read" and "YKINMK" aren't things they understand. Because those principles don't apply to situations where someone is doing something potentially harmful, and the way they see it, some people in fandom are doing potentially harmful stuff.

They're wrong, of course, and you're entirely entitled to your anger. I just don't think you understand antis very well. And that's fine, you don't need to.

Nah. It makes them feel icky but that isn't special enough so they must become warriors of God. Wait. Morals.

When someone proves themself to be an anti, I simply proceed to not think about them? I mean it's annoying when you're in a smaller fandom where a couple of the people in the main fandom tags turn out to be antis and then you lose a lot of general content, and I won't pretend it doesn't sting to see some of the things they put out there, but like... for me, these people don't have the power to ruin my ship, and I'm not interested in wasting my time and energy imagining anything about them.

And your fandom bff might not talk about her religion much but still believe in it. You say as far as you know, but like... a lot of people don't discuss faith in fandom spaces much.

No, they're not mentally ill. They're idiots who don't know any better than to be fascist. Block and ignore. Eventually they'll eat their own or learn better.

I just block and move on. I don't give two shits about their motivations.

I don’t really bother much with antis because I have much better things to do with my time, but antis are usually (like people who choose to bully irl) people who feel repressed and powerless in another aspect of their life and turn to an outlet such as being an asshole online to help them feel better.

Your fandom bff has it right - doesn’t matter if the antis are there screaming at you. Just walk right on past.

I used to low-key be one (didn't send hate but agreed with some of the sentiments), so I'm pretty much totally unphased by them. I just roll my eyes. I know they think they're right. I understand their perspective. I know that from where they're standing, their stance seems extremely reasonable.

I do think some antis are just looking for an excuse to hate on a ship and its fans, and the sheer disingenuousness of those antis does annoy me. But either way, they don't affect how I feel about my ships one way or the other. I've had a very controversial OTP for several years now and I can safely say antis could never ruin it for me. Nothing they say matters to me, ultimately.

I still don't understand what anti's are. They hate certain ships because they're "problematic," or something?

Oh, I guess I ignore them. I don't think the two small fandoms I'm active in right now even have people like this, and the big ones I just read fic.

It’s not possible to be a BNF anti though is it? Anti implies that they’re reasonably verbal about it, and the BNF fan army would swallow them whole if that were to happen.

There are BNFs whose whole personality is (or they just revel in it a lot) to be an asshole shit stirrer.

IME/IMO They're either asshole bully who peaked in middle/high school or a bullied person IRL who can only bully people online as a means of standing up for themselves

Generally I simply scroll past/ignore/block.

I sometimes have to remind myself it's not worth the effort to read a lot/engage.

I personally think it's more or less bored or lonely people who like the stimulation of being angry. So they get self righteous on petty/superficial things or they purposefully double down on controversial topics/beliefs.
And so they feel validated that they are right and someone is wrong or that they were able to upset someone(s).

I used to be someone who got self righteous to feel important. Or I'd troll and purposefully say things to kiss people off.
It was really sad, because I wasn't in a good place and I thought I was such a badass.

So yeah, I just remind myself it's usually not worth the effort to engage with rage bait.
