I guess I'm either lucky or just more hermit-y than I realize; i find very little hostility in fandom.

It seems to really depend on the fandom. Some are still really awesome. Others have gotten so bad I avoid the fandom because I don't want to lose my love for the media (mainly Star Wars and Doctor Who).
