Jaw pain after dentist

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-06-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What works best for you? I took tilenol. Can't do ibuprofin due to stomach issues from antibiotic. I've had a heating pad on as much as I can all day. But my jaw is spasming at this point.

Post-dental work pain usually involves swelling. Maybe try an ice pack instead of a heating pack?

I tried, the ice hurt. I have TMJ, and it often gets exacerbated when I'm at the dentist.

DA - Wrap the ice pack in something so it is dulled a little?

I agree that cooling would be better than heating. A heat pack will just increase blood flow to the area which will increase the pain/discomfort.

I'm very sensitive to cold too so I always find a cloth or some towelling to wrap the ice pack in before I use them.

Soaking in a warm bath helps me sometimes.

I have TMJ and the best thing for me is to sip cold drinks nonstop. I use a straw but that makes it worse for some people so ynmv. The cold drinks help with the swelling and pain, and the action of drinking keeps me distracted so I don’t get stressed and clench my jaw even more.
