What can I do with Chili Crisp Oil?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2024-06-25 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was lamenting to my sister about not having a spicy dip for some samosas I bought as Costco and she kindly gifted me some Xtra Spicy Chili Crisp (from Fly by Jing). But it is so incredibly hot. I tried like 1/2 tsp on some ramen and that was enough for me. I'm not really sure how to use it as a dip (maybe mix with mayo as gross as that might be??) and not sure what else to use it on. At least I know it will last me a while, lol.

How do you feel about yogurt or sour cream for mixing?

Put it in soups to dilute ! It'll give you enough flavour you don't have to add a lot either

Hummus dip or try making a spicy creamy feta dip?

For me, the chili crisp condiments are more of a "add a little bit to a dish" as opposed to eating it straight like a dipping sauce. Putting a bit in stir-fries, ramen, etc. might be good.

For a dipping sauce, maybe try Thai sweet chili sauce and add a bit of sriracha if you want it hotter? It's not very spicy by itself, but excellent with all kinds of fried foods. Also really good with fried foods is Maggi hot and sweet chili tomato sauce, it's like spicy ketchup, but runnier:

Maybe ranch or blue cheese sauce?

Or mix a little in soup/stew and just pair that with rice, I dunno.

Mix it with cheese, then mix it with noodles. An old Korean hack

Great summer recipe is smacked cucumbers. Dressing is usually black vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, chilli oil and garlic (sometime a bit of sugar as well) over smaller smacked cucumbers. Goes great with dumplings, too.

For soups: my favourite ramen/udon dish with chili oil is with a beef broth base, fried ground beef with plenty of peanut butter. Adding chill oil to anything that's creamy is best, imo. And peanut butter and chili is great.

You can also use it for a spicy soup base for hot pot in winter.

in my cooking experience, chili oil in general is meant to be added to 30 other ingredients to add a smidge of spice without overwhelming the palate. from the description, I can guess that your best bet is to add no more than half a teaspoon to anything, e.g. a dairy-based dip, cheese, stir-fry, acid-based sauce, so on and so forth. even my authentic Sichuan recipe for kung pao adds no more than a spritz of chili oil to the aromatics, so you can probably live with a "use sparingly" guideline.

if you make mac & cheese from scratch at all, totally add a shake of this, it would wake up the cheese in an amazing way.

Jaw pain after dentist

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-06-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What works best for you? I took tilenol. Can't do ibuprofin due to stomach issues from antibiotic. I've had a heating pad on as much as I can all day. But my jaw is spasming at this point.

Post-dental work pain usually involves swelling. Maybe try an ice pack instead of a heating pack?

I have TMJ and the best thing for me is to sip cold drinks nonstop. I use a straw but that makes it worse for some people so ynmv. The cold drinks help with the swelling and pain, and the action of drinking keeps me distracted so I don’t get stressed and clench my jaw even more.

Anyone familiar with Heathrow airport

(Anonymous) 2024-06-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of a random one here but: I am trying to plan ahead and buy a coach ticket in advance. How long should I give myself between scheduled plane landing and when the coach leaves? I was thinking 2hrs? I will not have any checked bags.

Re: Anyone familiar with Heathrow airport

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
My rule of thumb has always been 1.5 hours for smaller airports, 2+ hours for bigger but functioning airports, and 4+ hours for absolute chaos portals. That's Heathrow btw, and it's tourist season.

I have no advice for Heathrow other than to say I hate that airport. Next time I go to the UK I will go to any other airport than Heathrow.

If you don't have checked bags, 2 hrs is pretty generous. Then again, Heathrow is huge if you don't know it well. I've only been there 3 times and I always give myself 2hrs between arriving and a flight.

Re: Anyone familiar with Heathrow airport

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Heathrow is huge and extremely chaotic at the best of times. In summer give yourself 3 hours minimum, otherwise I'd say say 2 (with no checked bags).

Re: Anyone familiar with Heathrow airport

The last time I was at Heathrow, it was really weird, but given that was July 7, 2005, that makes sense. It's a really big airport, but I seem to recall they had the way to and from ground transport pretty streamlined, though we did take the train.

This is a pretty simplified map, but it should give you a rough idea:

Re: Anyone familiar with Heathrow airport

I absolutely hate Heathrow, as a migrant now living in the UK I had my worst border control experiences over there lol, granted, I have a weak passport from a third world country so your experience probably won't be as bad. I'd say give it about 3 hours just to have a safe window to navigate it, because it's BIG and if you take the wrong inner train you can end up in the entirely opposite direction of where you need to be at. There's many cafes and food places around in case you do get time to kill.

Re: Recs and Advice

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Should I even contact someone that had a big crush on me 30+ years ago? My life is so disappointing, I don't even want to depress and disappoint them and let them know I'm a loser. I friend-zoned this person for a few years back in the day but I really liked them. It's one of the regrets I have when I think of this time period. Whatever they were offering back then, I should have taken them up on it. I want them to know that I liked them but was all kinds of awkward. I think this person may be with someone so that's also preventing me from contacting them as well.

Cat Grass

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I’m vaguely aware that cat grass is a thing that exists. I’d love to grow some for my cat (semi feral who spends more time inside as she gracefully ages). I saw some seeds on Chewy that reviewers said were better than kits and lots grow the grass in clear or light pots/containers. Does anyone know why?

Also, what exactly is the point of the grass? To eat it to prevent hairballs? I’m a little confused on that. And do I let her have unrestricted access or is it a special treat like, here’s your pot of grass?

Any tips and guidance welcomed. I’m a total dog mom and I’m still not sure why she chose our house with the clueless humans and feline aggressive dogs, but we’re glad she did because we love her dearly. We’re just kinda lost on some cat specific things.
