What are some things that fanfic writers do that you hate? Not so much tropes you hate but I guess that can be included.

Author notes within the fic. Hate it. Thankfully it is pretty rare.

Agreed. If they're all unrelated drabbles not so much. If there's a clear theme/direction then they can be quite interesting.

Untagged first person POV is a jump scare every time. "I-" AHH, back button.

Haha yes. I do this with books too. Read the description then open it up and "dammit!" close it back up.

This is the kind of opinion that tells me the commenter read fic before they read books. First person isn't some weird uncommon thing outside of fanfic. You're just as likely to find a book in first person as third.

NAYRT - I read a ton of original fiction before I read fanfic, and then I read quite a lot of fanfic in first person before the trend shifted strongly to third person. But man, these days it's hard to make myself look past first person, even in original fiction. I just don't like it. I don't like what it brings to the story. I don't like the effect it has on my engagement with the protagonist. I will still read first person original fiction, but it's the opposite of a draw for me.

The idea of someone reading fic before books is so bizarre to me.

First person used to be way more common in kids and YA and rarer in adult books. It seems to be the default in a lot of adult books now.

What time period was this? As far as I can tell, first person has been fairly popular for at least the last 150 years, well before “YA” was a thing.

Massive multi-fandom drabble collections, especially when the author doesn't label their chapters so it's up to you to dig through each one to find what you actually want.

When authors put up one pairing in a multi series fic(s), and then have the end game ship be an added third that's only introduced/tagged for in the latest fic installment in the series.

Sorry guys but I came into expecting A/B, not A/B/C. If I knew the ultimate goal was A/B/C I would have gladly passed on it and not been annoyed.

People who humblebrag in the author's note about how quickly and sloppily they wrote the fic. Paraphrasing real examples I've seen:

"Posting from my phone while sitting on the tarmac waiting for my plane to take off! Sorry for typos!"

"Wrote this at 3 a.m. while high on cold medicine, might edit later."

If it wasn't worth your time to give it a basic proofread for quality control, it ain't worth my time to read.

I don't see it often, but it's an automatic pass from me. When the summary goes:

"What if Scene A went a different way?
What if Person B had made a different choice?
What if Person C recognized their feelings sooner?
What if all of it could have been avoided?
What new problems will they face?"

You get ONE conceit. If you're just gonna change everything about how characters react in canon then it's gonna have shit characterization.

There are plenty of other ways to adequately depict how a character is feeling and/or build tension. Please do not resort to lazy writing (and I cannot understand how readers sit there and go oooh this author is such a good writer)

When people write shit that blatantly contradicts canon and doesn't mark it as AU or indicate it deviates from canon. I catch it early enough and nope out of it but man is it annoying.
