Cloaca

(Anonymous) 2024-06-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Is it still technically a cloaca if urine and semen are excreted through a separate hole? Wiki is defining cloaca as "the rear orifice that serves as the only opening for the digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts of many vertebrate animals."

I am disinclined to dig more deeply into this because it kind of gives me the ick a little, but if anybody knows whether it's still a cloaca when it's not the only rear orifice, I would be interested to know the answer.

There are lots of cloacal arrangements, and a lot of mammals (especially marsupials) have everything separate in there (with one opening), and a penis that becomes external. Kangaroos for example. And I assure you kangaroo testicles are out and highly visible!
