I agree that a lot of slash romance is written in this crappy, gender-essentialist way, for sure. but this is often a job for A/B/O fic.

I've done worldbuilding where people of any sex could be an alpha or omega or beta, the alpha women have dicks, the omega men have a uterus, etc. Basically a secondary or tertiary designation, like male/female/nb, straight/gay/bi, alpha/beta/omega.

It doesn't have to have femmy stereotypes if the worldbuilding sets it up a certain way.

But yeah, I did make omegas of both sexes kind of emo and alphas more assertive, because I wanted the designations to be affected by imaginary hormones. I did that because I wanted to play with a stereotype that wasn't due to real life gender/sex, 'cause that gives me the ick.

anon: I hate when someone has to be the Weepy One and the other has to be the Tough One

you: "this is a job for A/B/O fic"

your ABO fic and also everyone elses': well I still made my ABO fic have a designated Weepy One and Tough One, but see, I explained it, and also I did it because I like it, and it's different because I made it theoretically a 2-axis grid where the Weepy and Tough roles are assigned differently than in tradwife fantasies!

anon. friend. pal. you are welcome to like it and write it however you want. you are welcome to kink on OP and my's squick. but ABO is the literal opposite of a solution for this problem. it is the thing we hate turned up to 11 with self-lubricating assholes because no ABO writer is willing to admit they have re-invented vaginas while re-inventing Sex-crazed Weepy Sub Women

AGAIN. that's fine. have fun with it. but have a tiny bit of self-awareness that your imagined nuances are not going to make this palatable to people who are not kinked for the basic premise
