I felt like the chair was super well foreshadowed. The line in the speech, the German text in the background, the general hopefully vibe. Or are you referring to something else?

Is it though? The movie doesn't show any attempt on his part to actually look for her, so it seems like he just assumed she was dead.

People caught in a blastwave that destroys whole city blocks do tend to be, you know, taking the forever nap. Plus he even said at one point that he was dreaming the dream of a dead man, or words to that effect.

That one was a little less foreshadowed, just the bureaucrat saying they were a mess trying to find people, but I still bought it. If our protagonist can be totally fine with the protection of an alley it seems reasonable to me some people might get a week long coma rather than an eternal dirt nap.
