I always figured the death of Granny was his way of ushering his readers through his own impending death. I don't know the other characters would have that sort of impact. I suppose it depends on who you like most.

Yes, Granny went with him. Somewhere in the books she says that one of the roles of witches is to hold the door open for those who can't go through on their own.

Yeah <3 I found it rather lovely that Granny was the implied psychopomp and/or closest parallel to Pterry himself.
