Vent thread.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's getting closer to July 4th and that means random fireworks going off at any time, even in residential areas and I live in a rural area so it's even worse. My dog is terrified of loud noises and will tremble and cringe, hide in the basement and refuse to come out until it's been quiet for hours. Not everyone has this problem, and I get that. But the number of people who get all pissy about the possibility of warning their neighbors that at such-and-such time they'll be setting off fireworks for half an hour is... special. And very American. This is also true for people who want to shoot off their guns (not hunting, target shooting that goes on for a while) because HOW DARE YOU infringe upon their rights as an American by asking for a heads up?

If I knew in advance, I could rearrange my dog's walk/potty schedule and medicate him appropriately. But because of assholes, I have to guess and be at the mercy of any idiot who bought firecrackers and believes it's un-American to have compassion for animals and/or veterans with PTSD. You know damn well these assholes are MAGAheads, too. I hope their bowels rot inside and out and they shit themselves in the middle of WalMart.

Unfortunately it's not just MAGA who can be assholes. I live in an extremely liberal city and fireworks have been banned for several years. Still get them going off. Like, not only do I want to sleep but I want there not to be FIRE. We're in FIRE SEASON.

It's been very dry and hot here as well, so that's also a risk. But the kind of people who love setting off copious amounts of fireworks and don't care about animals or veterans also don't care about setting stuff on fire. And I said they're likely MAGAheads because of where I live, not because I think liberals don't set off fireworks.

Ditto here.

Liberal state but people love setting off fireworks. Can't even purchase fireworks that go up in the air but people still have them. We currently are under warning sue to land being drier than usual, but that doesn't stop people from lighting fireworks.

I personally don't mind fireworks but I totally get not wanting them to go off randomly, for all the reasons you listed. And there really isn't any reason to set them off outside of July 4. Except maybe New Years, and even then... eh, maybe.

Maybe they should go back to banning fireworks sales and just have the city/county have its own scheduled show. I know that still wouldn't stop idiots, but maybe fewer of them would bother.

I don't personally mind them either, because I'm not a frightened dog or a veteran with PTSD. But I wouldn't purchase them and set them off in my own damn yard because I don't enjoy the thought of other peoples' pets trembling with fear or people who are having nightmare flashbacks because of the sound. Around here, people love setting them off on any celebratory occasion including Memorial Day weekend which doesn't exactly seem appropriate. I'm sick of it.

Interesting. In my neighborhood, the people most likely to be setting off fireworks right now are first and second-generation Chinese immigrants. So, American, but not in the way you're implying and probably not MAGA.

Sorry you and your dog are having a rough time of it .

America has been doing random fireworks for this holiday for several decades at this point. Basically, you bought a dog knowing this. This one is on you.

Fuck off

That’s energy you could have expended getting your pupper a thundershirt or otherwise doing something to care for his needs, but better to complain about the neighbors not taking responsibility for the dog you wanted I guess.

Re: Vent thread.

Thundershirts aren't a magical cure-all. My dog, for example, hates it and is not comforted by it at all. BTW, please work on yourself and channeling whatever toxicity is going on into being a better person instead of a lame internet troll.

What a stupid response. Do you blame the rape victim for having a short skirt too?

I was going to ask if you also thought that veterans should've known better than to join the military at this point, but something tells me you wouldn't realize or care how stupid your reasoning sounds.

Not all dogs mind, though, and there's no way to know how a dog will react until placed in that situation. Plus things can change with the animal, especially if their hearing starts to decline.

(Things can also change with humans. I used to be annoyed by random fireworks. Nowadays if I can't seem them I am hypervigilant. Thanks, 2020.)

I didn't ask to be born here.

I’m in a similar situation. We don’t walk our dogs starting the Friday before the 4th. We just go into the yard for short bursts. All the fans are on high and the tvs are on nonstop. The background noise helps them tremendously and they rarely hear anything going on outside.
I wish people would just set them off at a certain time on a certain day but it isn’t going to happen. And it’s not just America; many other countries have celebrations that incorporate fireworks and there are always people who set them off randomly just because they have them and don’t want to wait for the actual event they’re celebrating.
It sucks but we have calendars so we know when it’s going to happen, it’s just a matter of figuring out what works for you and your household to get through it.

At least in the few places in CA where they still sell fireworks they've stopped selling those fucking Piccolo Pete/whistling fireworks. When I was younger every dog on the street would start howling when those got set off.
