Haven't seen anyone sponsor BetterHelp since forever, but maybe I'm luck. I try to give them the doubt of maybe not knowing. I found out about the debacle with BetterHelp very late myself, and it doesn't seem like something people talk about anymore. (but would expect them to look into it at least, I guess.)

I hear Better Help ads on SiriusXM. Every time I hear Clay Cane doing an ad read for them I cringe a little on the inside.

I assume that a bunch of them are still under contract. I've found it a helpful reminder that while I might like a creator they aren't an expert, they're reading an ad.

What I find helpful is getting sold on the idea. I'd heard Better Help reads so often that when I was considering counseling I tried online stuff, but I went through my health insurance after checking multiple online sources.

Always remember that the ones that advertise the most are spending the most on advertising. So. Like. See what the competitor you haven't heard 50 ads for is doing because they tend to be a little better or cheaper.

honestly, betterhelp did help me. i used it at a time before all the bad stuff came out, and the sheer low barrier to get started helped me get someone without all the bureaucratic stuff depression makes so so so hard. i signed up from the couch, didn't have to make a ton of decisions, and the therapist i got paired with was pretty well suited to the kind of support i needed. after 6 months or so I was feeling a lot more stable and stopped.

honestly, so many companies are doing weird scummy stuff, idk, sometimes i wonder if they get more flak just cause their adds are more common/annoying. is betterhelp worse than the intimidating guantlet of finding a psych pro on your own?? does the scummy stuff make it worse than nothing? i feel like it has a niche.

i don't blame anybody for not wanting anything to do with it, but i also can't resent it either.

Yeah I get this. Pretty sure the reason DT is doing this stuff (other than his personal stake due to his nb child) is that he is perfectly placed to not need defending too much, he's deflecting the heat from more vulnerable people and given he's the exact opposite of terminally online he probably won't even see half the reactionary crap being said about him.

Yeah, I mean, Michael Sheen and David Tennant are real life friends as well, so if Tennant needing defending I'm sure he could ask. Anyway, I'm just glad that trans people in the UK have a big celeb on their side because they surely need it.

Actually, fandom is where we explore fandom.

Which is not to say there isn't a place within fandom for exploring issues, sociopolitical and otherwise. There is, and it's good there is. But no, fandom is not "where we explore issues", it is where we smoosh our favourite fictional characters together and make them kiss. The clue is in the name.

I'm of two minds on this. I do agree that the example shows in the secret are political and raise issues that are interesting to discuss. If you're a fan of The Boys and you don't realize fascism is bad ALONG with the gross superhero fun, you're missing the point by a mile.

On the other hand, the part of fandom that wants to hate on an actor because they haven't mentioned Palestine can fuck right off. I hate shit tests like that when artists (along with everyone else!) are allowed not to share their political thoughts.

Fandom is a great place to meet other fans and learn different viewpoints, new concepts, other ways of doing or thinking about things. And that can spur ideologic, social, and political change. But at its base, it’s about fans discussing and creatively exploring a shared interest.
