Sorry to burst your bubble but sometimes it isn’t angry shouty anon. I’m the one in the 90s thread pissing everyone off and I make no apology for that. I’m not the troll who pops up just to leave stupid or insane one or two sentence comments. And that’s obvious if apply critical thinking. But much as I love this place, critical thinking isn’t common here. Which is why so many think the 90s were some halcyon era and any dissent on any topic is a single troll.

Nah, fam. You just refuse to consider anyone else's point of view. That's not critical thinking. That's obstinacy.

Point of view is opinion based. The thread is about facts. The 90s weren’t a golden age full of hope. It was a decade of eroded civil liberties, famine, fascism, and terror. I mean, good for you if you enjoyed your 90s childhood or whatever but that doesn’t suddenly make it some universally awesome decade.

nayrt but a correction, the OP was only talking about a portion of the 90s, not the entire decade.

I'm not saying that by itself suddenly makes the decade awesome or anything, but I just noticed the argument keeps coming from a place of "the entire decade" when that's not what OP was referring to.

OP was only referencing the late 90s. But in practice, the global mood was influenced by the entire decade with the added bonus of Y2K bug anxiety looming. If you check the global happiness index, it wasn’t a time of fun or hope.

Some of us were adults and were also hopeful in the 90s because things were getting better. I dunno how else to explain to you that if there were 6 famines the decade before and only 4 this decade that is better, that is hopeful. JFC.

Personally, I would return to the late 90s era that OP was referring to, but that's only because things were going the best they ever had for me (oh young me). In a pre-9/11 world, things did feel hopeful. I also acknowledge that this may not have been the case for folks not in my shoes.

Some other westerners, too. Globally, that wasn’t the case. And the whole basis of the secret is that that time was free of specific things that are happening now. It wasn’t. Not even close. OP just wasn’t aware or has forgotten about what really happened. It doesn’t invalidate their personal experience but claiming their personal experience as universal truth invalidates the personal experience of literally billions of people.

Yeah discourse happens from time to time here. And it’s always really obvious that it isn’t shouty anon who has a very specific voice, as it were. They always bang on about the same couple things and it’s always low hanging fruit. That so many take the bait is mental. That so many think all discourse is shouty anon is disappointing.

Yeah, I'm not American either, and I agree. There was a LOT of bad shit going on in the 90s, but things didn't feel nearly as broadly hopeless as they do these days. I've always been a pretty hopeful person, but it's become increasingly difficult to avoid the sense of incipient doom; that humanity as a whole is sliding backwards, is catastrophically in decline, and that we aren't going to be able to turn it around for a very, very long time.

I don't want to believe that's true, but these days...I just don't know how to be optimistic anymore, without that optimism being the blind kind.
