I figure it must be people who don't quite know the full story. Like they admire what a free spirit he was and how he just upped and left normal life behind to do what he wanted, i.e. wander around, hitchhiking and appreciating nature because well, those are all things people yearn to do to some degree. Then I suppose a lot of the people who feel that was inspirational sort of overlook the lonely, completely unnecessary death brought on by the same free spirit mindset that told McCandless that oh no, no need to bring proper equipment or learn how to read maps or whatever. Just trust that there's a higher power or something that will keep you out of trouble, the way it always has before.

And then he slowly starves to death in an abandoned van in the wilderness. People are really good at not seeing what they don't want to see, however.
