It really depends on the house, but a lot of people don't have time or money to invest in a lot of landscaping, and don't have the skills or interest to do i themselves. Plain grass is cheap and easy.

I despise it. I don't mow my lawn except for the bit you can see from the street (the city will complain), and i'm planting state-specific plants for bees and butterflies. The deer love my yard and browse, relax, or hide their fawns in it. I love it.

Also, a lot of cookie-cutter housing has absolute shite for dirt in the yard, and if you can get grass to grow you are LUCKY.
