We've also kinda had a subcultural reckoning around how much weeb behavior is insensitive, racist, or generally an inappropriate way to act and talk about Japanese culture when you're not Japanese. Some of the bad behavior still exists, but these days fellow weebs will be the first to smack it down.

(If you want to see a contemporary fandom that is still waiting on that reckoning, look at Cnovel and Cdrama fandoms...)
