It doesn't help that I regularly see authors screenshot nice comments that they received on their fic and then castigate or make fun of the commenter because it's not the comment they wanted to receive.

The screenshot and share trend is why I have actually stopped commenting as much. I had to leave a lot of fic communities on reddit because the trend was not kind to my anxiety.

Where do they do this? Certain fandoms?

I'm glad I've never seen that because RUDE.

Also, if someone begs for comments and kudos, I'm less likely to leave them. Desperation is a bad look.

I've seen them in passing on tumblr and also on reddit. They were all stripped of IDs, so I have no idea the fandoms. I'm sure they happen in other places as well, but those are the only social media sites I use.

Ah, thanks!

I saw a lot of it on reddit, on the ao3 sub and certain fic communities. Not all of them were mocking the commenters, but still. And not all of them had the ID blurred out. Not cool to share that stuff imo.

I once did this, but in my defense-

1) the commenter was using the review section (which was public) of my story as a sounding board to bash other authors, and
2) I mocked the comment in my private journal, under a protected entry where the commenter was not likely to ever see it.

I mean, I'm all for praise but not at the expense of other people. It's like an unclean compliment - flattery by insulting oneself or someone else. Not good.

I think it's still not cool, but I also think in the case of your own protected journal entry is very different than a public forum like reddit.

Wait wait wait...you can't leave comments with *any* degree of criticism because that's a big meanie No-No these days, but authors do this to nice comments? Fuck that!

Yeah. I've seen people complain about comments that are the heart emoji, that say "kudos," that say "second read kudos," saying they're worthless and those people shouldn't waste the author's time by making them think it was an "actual" comment. Those are just the ones I've seen most often, but I also seen complaints about longer positive comments as well.

Choosy fucking beggars, aren't they?
