We're...not? Fics update when and if they update. But some authors shame comments and then get pikachu face when no one comments anymore.

Literally no-one gives a shit if you don't update your forty-seven thousand WIPs.

And the ones that do care are the ones who -- guess what -- do comment. But apparently "love this chapter, please update soon" is the 'wrong kind of comment' or whatever.
