I've noticed a considerable amount of belly aching over people who say they do want comments in their fics.

It's not "people who say they want comments". It's people demanding comments as 'payment' for the 'free labour' that literally no-one has asked them to do.

Usually in tandem with "kudos/likes/[insert any other form of appreciation that doesn't stroke the author's ego to their satisfaction] are worthless".

Yeah, I think this is key. It's not so much the, "please show appreciation for the fics you enjoy" as it is the, "you MUST show appreciation in this one specific way! If you show it in any other way, then you suck!"

Then just don't leave a comment. Thought crimes aren't real. Either read the fic and don't leave a comment or just stop reading that fic.

What do thought crimes have to do with anything?

When someone's behaving in an antisocial way, people are allowed to be annoyed by it and to discuss it amongst themselves.
