Same.

Ehhhhhh I definitely *prefer* that but a good writer can make it work either way.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, it may be written well but that doesn't mean I want to read about it.

Big agree

I like both, but I also like it to be clear from the start what we're going for here.

First of all, if you don't want to see bigotry in your fantasy escapism fic at all, that's completely fair.

Secondly, my big issue with "period typical [bigotry]" tags is that generally the fic in question has what is actually modern bigotry with a historical "flavor" if that makes sense. I am really interested in history so when I read historical slash AUs set in a time and place I'm familiar with, for example, I often find myself thinking that the "historical" homophobia is really not grounded in the setting— characters use modern slurs, and modern-day ideas of what is considered appropriate, with a few old-timey words here and there. Of course I don't expect AU fanfiction to be realistic or historically accurate, I just find it uninteresting to throw totally modern bigotry into a fic as if it has always looked the same. Plus I think considering a more realistic historical context opens up a lot of potential for characterization and plots, if the author does want to tackle heavy subject matter of that nature.

This is a really good point! I think it's a lot more interesting when writers actually do go deep on the specific historical context rather than just assuming bigotry is bigotry. If writers are going to use period-typical bigotry, I want to see some thought put into it.

ayrt

There are a lot of historical settings where no one would blink an eye at two men having sex in itself, as long as the relationship complied with social norms, but huge consequences and scandal would result from those norms being broken. I do enjoy heavier fic sometimes so I would really enjoy seeing scenarios like that explored indepth, instead of another rehashing of "probably people were bigoted in the same exact ways back then as they are now, idk, angst." That said, nothing against fic that uses historical AU more as an aesthetic backdrop for a modern story, I do get the appeal there. After all, in AU fic we get to pick and choose what elements of a setting we want to use.

I generally agree, though one thing I always nope out of is stories where there's no homophobia by there's still period-typical sexism. Vice versa also gives me major pause. The two are just so deeply intertwined that I find it incoherent when one is completely absent but the other is still fully present.
