(Anonymous) 2024-07-12 03:25 am (UTC)(link)I'm hoping he's just doing this to catch the attention of the average American voter, only to change his tone to something more serious closer to the election. I also hope he isn't underestimating just how dumb and easily influenced the average American voter is (and yes, I include myself here), because bothsidesism is a goddamn dangerous game to play right now. On the other hand, I did see a few folks calling Stewart out in the YT comments for not focusing more on Project 2025, so maybe there's hope after all.
(For the record, I don't mind having conversations about Biden's age, but I don't believe in acting like it's all his fault for being old and all his fault for being our best candidate this year. I think we all share the blame for the latter, at least.)

It's not his fault for being old (though stubborn we can blame him for). And he isn't the best candidate this year. He is (or was) just perceived as the strongest, but only because he's already president and the DNC endorsement of an incumbent is almost automatic. And the people who tried last time probably didn't want run up against the same stupid mindsets that made him the candidate last election. He wasn't even in the top five of the available candidates then, but a combination of familiarity, name recognition, spillover good feelings from the Obama years, experience, and the fact that he's an old white guy made the DNC consider him the best bet against Trump. But from what I've seen, he's not a good debater, he's generally an average orator, he's got a temper that he needs to rein in more, and he's okay at some policies, but not great at nuance. Also, he is old. And he very much does seem to be having age-related issues. And that absolutely is something that should be taken into consideration.
All that said, if Biden's who ends up against Trump, I'll vote Biden, but I won't be voting for him because he's Biden, I'll be voting for him because he's not Trump. Again. And I hate that we're back here. Again. With a candidate I consider below average up against a candidate I consider abominable. And I hate it, every part of it.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-12 05:10 am (UTC)(link)Well said! This is pretty much how I feel. I’m going to be voting against Trump but I sure wish I could vote for someone this time around. Obama’s reelection was the last time I for voted for a candidate instead of against one.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-12 11:12 am (UTC)(link)People aren't complaining about Biden's age because it's "fair;" they're complaining about it because it's a legitimate concern.
Look, let's be real: if the Democrats were serious about beating Trump, about the notion that he's an existential threat, then they would try to run someone other than Biden. He is likely not going to be able to beat Trump this year -- and that isn't because pundits are talking about his cognitive decline; it's because anyone who pays any attention at all can see it. No, it's not his fault, but it means that he's a terrible candidate for multiple reasons.
I think the political establishment is perfectly fine with Trump winning. I think they like the way he completely freaks everyone out, and therefore allows them to shield themselves from criticism. I mean, goodness, they've certainly got you, haven't they? Can't say anything negative about anyone who isn't Trump! That's bothsidesism! Yeah, well, we're supposed to hold all of our elected officials accountable, and if there's a group of them that we think is taboo to criticize, then there's no incentive for them to govern well.

Not necessarily, as far as I can tell. More and more Democratic leaders are publicly on the fence. I was actually very surprised to find out my progressive House rep was defending Biden while my state's more mainstream Senators expressed unease.
