IDK. It's hard to make those judgments in aggregate. And the much-more-pervasive homophobia in older fandom could be really awful at times; that's a big positive change for all the other negative changes to weigh up against.

It was a lot easier to fly under the radar back then though, especially if you were passing, before the attention hogs and drama queens threw us all under the bus by thrusting us to the forefront of their little culture war. So give me that things have improved either, I've been outed more times in the last couple of years than I ever was in the whole of the eighties and nineties combined.

Just because it was better for you doesn’t mean it was better for everyone. You really seem to be missing that point. Your experience doesn’t eclipse everyone else’s. “I enjoyed 90s fandom more, here are reasons why,” is a secret that wouldn’t get this much pushback. “90s fandom was objectively better,” is bullshit. Especially because it really sounds like you/OP are only talking about a very short time in the 90s and overlooking the rest of the decade. Which has become standard in FS lately so I guess it’s to be expected but some of us are old enough to remember the whole decade, not just the 2-3 years of your childhood that you liked. Most of the world didn’t have internet. Less than half of households in the richest countries on the planet had computers before 2001. It’s great that you came from a rich family and had an awesome fandom experience at the end of the 90s but that doesn’t mean everyone had the same experience.
