Batman Beyond was actually a horror-cartoon, convince me I'm wrong. I realize all Batman leans into the horror tropes, and BTAS certainly leaned harder, but BB picked that baton up and ran with it hard. It is like they took the instruction to make a kiddie version of Batman from the suits and made it their aim to fuck with that instruction every chance they got.

I know someone who went to college with some of the younger animators. Original audience was college age. Suits changed it lower. All the Jokers graffiti is supposed to be blood not paint.

The episode that still fucks with me to this day is the one where Dana was kidnapped by Ratboy. I saw it when I was in the single digits and was super creeped out despite being too young to fully grasp the implications. Now that I'm an adult, it's even creepier.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (batcat (batman returns))

Batman Beyond was my first DCU *anything* and I loved how fucked up this was :D

I've rewatched it/completed the episodes I missed this year (one episode left and I'm done...) and it still holds up so well.

Batman Beyond secret! My favorite DCAU!

Personally, MY Fandom Secret for BB (well, Batman franchise overall) is that I hate Damian Wayne purely because I only accept one (biological) son in Bruce Wayne's life and that is Terry Fucking McGinnis.

That was the weakest part of Epilogue, Terry could and should have been able to be Batman on his own terms. He didn't need retconned into having a blood connection to Bruce. Just another example of Hollywood's devaluing adoptive relationships.

I feel like Inque, Shriek, Spellbinder etc would also be great. They really put great effort into Terry's personal Rogue's Gallery.

(I just looked up said rogue's gallery and it reminded me that Robert Vance was a thing. Holy shit talk about scary episodes. Ghost in the machine taken way too literally.)
