NAYRT but there's no such thing as free college or university education in the US; the best students can hope for are need and/or merit based scholarships that can help cover the cost.

In the UK Fee Paying School is generally referring to a private high school or prep school, university is university and not school.

But you mentioned the Oxbridge colleges as well.

Because Oxford and Cambridge Universities are Collegiate Universities.

Hence the 'no American actors anymore.' You may have thought private schools, but you included universities.

All American actors went to Oxbridge? Damn, I'd have thought there would be at least one university in America that trained actors. Maybe in New York, or something.

No, they said "fee paying schools", which is a specific category of school in the UK. They clearly didn't mean to include all universities in the US in their post, based on context.

Note to self: Run this past the host of Lost in the Pond (as he indicated that private schools tend to be called public schools).

Technically not all fee paying schools in the UK are Public Schools, for example Dragon School, despite the whole posh bastard image it projects is not a Public School. You're only a Public School if you are mentioned in the Public Schools Act 1868 (and one extra, City of London School as the result of a court case the following year).

All the rest are jumped up private schools, who just like the image and ape the traditions and prestige. Never, ever, try and claim you are from a Public School to certain parts of the UK if you aren't from one of the schools mentioned. The mockery is vicious, and social revenge often swift.
