i don't think that tenor matters, since the reality going to be really narrow. for our own sake, I think people should create a polite fiction that they're not talking to people who don't like their fic. that's what a polite fiction is. if people really want to burst their bubble in these discussions instead of just merely stopping being annoyed, you can always ask them why any reader should encourage product they want less of.
